Hello all....i am new to the forum...i am looking at a smith and wesson revolver....it says .38 special on it...most of the identification about patents is on the top side of the approximately 6 inch barrel....i looked inside the swing out cylinder and found the numbers19209......on the bottom of the handle or grip is 317266....i am not sure what the model is of this gun or the year of manufacture, but before i think about purchasing it i was hoping to get more information....thanks and i hope i posted properly!

It is a Military & Police Model of 1905 4th Change made sometime between the World Wars. Somebody will be along shortly to get it down to a year or so. The real serial number is the one on the butt; the one under the yoke is a factory assembly number of no importance after the gun is completed and sold.

This is a common gun, its value and utility depend largely on condition.

It was made in late 1919, probably September or October, among the very first production having the heat-treated cylinder steel. It is what S&W called the Military and Police (M&P) model, and could have either a round or a square butt.

Thanks so much for the quick replies!....the revolver has wear indicative of it's age then, the cylinder seems tight when locking up...the grips are firm....no pitting or rust anywhere...seller wants $450 for the revolver....now i have to figure out what it is worth....thanks for all of your help!

You can get a Nice Model 10, which is what the M&P became, for less than $450.

They made Millions of them (Model 10s) so even now, really nice ones are plentiful.

Thanks....that is good to know.....i will check out that model

I'd say $450 is an excessive price for that M&P unless it was in exceptionally good and original condition. If you merely want a good shooter, and not a collectible item, you can do much better.
