I decided to post a idea for my car after seeing the road runner thread. I’m going to buy a fe mock block and start working on my 68 Torino GT. A good friend has Buick grand national. Ever since I seen that car I keep flip flopping on turbo charging my 427 fe.
The problem is I already have a tri power set up with new carburetors I built for it. I figured I can mock up a turbo set up and see maybe I can make a turbo work before I settle.
I talked to a guy on Facebook with a boosted 390 Torino. His single turbo set up operate off a blow through carburetor with hood results. But I would do mine with efi.

My opinion, your money!

I wouldn't risk the 427 with boost.
FE 390s are still easier to find. Boost will compensate for the reduced displacement.
Ford made FT engines for truck use but the distributor hole, motor mounts and crankshaft snout & balance were different from FEs. Too bad 'cause they had some tough parts.

True. No need to risk blowing a rare engine

Turbocharging with carbs is not exactly straight forward.
You could do a twin turbski draw through setup, but that means a custom plenum for your carbs and an upper manifold for the intake.
A blow through system is basically an air hat to the carbs. But very few carbs play well in a positive pressure environment.
Alas, the best performing option right now is either the Holley Sniper EFI or Terminator EFI system.
They can be configured for practically anything.
But for this convenience, you trade your vintage big block soul for digital demons.

What's in the Torino now? 351? Stroke it and go with a low boost supercharger setup, using a centrifugal.

I took a 1.8 liter Miata engine to 225 rear wheel horsepower (stock is 108) with nothing but a header and slightly better intake cam in addition to a small centrifugal supercharger from this company:

Rotrex – Superior Centrifugal Superchargers

It was intercooled, but ran the stock injectors and ECU.Turned it into a 4 second 0-60 car without changing the stock gearing. Weight of the car with a full tank of gas was 2300 pounds.

You probably already run premium, but turbo or supercharger, watch out for knock, it'll rip you apart.

Nothing like boosted power.

If you want turbos.. build a 351 stoker (427) and have fun... save the FE for later when you would rather adjust a carburetor then mess with a laptop... decide what you want to mess with track side...

Probably be a better idea to stick with my carburetors. Problem is I can use the same parts I collected (other than the intake) for a turbo setup. When I bought my Torino. A 427 FE was always my goal. When I bought my 427. 3x2 was my goal. When I saw my friends grand national. His turbo kinda stuck with me. But I’m the end. I would be losing something not going with my carburetors. My carburetors are very pretty too. Lol

I’m not doing it. My friend with the grand national said it wouldn’t be a good idea to risk a rare engine with boost. I will stick with my 3 carburetors.

I’ve had 2 Turbo Buicks & they are very awesome. But their compression is 7.9-8.6 to 1. The added boost pushes that towards 15 to 1, with enough octane & buttoned down heads. A V8 with 10.5+ to 1 won’t last. Your engine must be built for boost for drivability & longevity.

I’m not doing it. Riding in my friends grand national is awesome. But I think it isn’t for me. Maybe another project one day.
