Turtle Dogs!!!

This is a full page spread in my local paper this morning and with the pack of dog lovers, hunters and outdoorsman here, I knew many would enjoy. Just when I thought I had seen it all—The Boykin’s are turtle hunting machines.

My bud Jake had a thing for turtles. Liked to carry them around like a big chew toy. Never cracked one open though.

That was an interesting article.

In my neck of the woods, though, the dogs would be unnecessary. I could just drive up and down the road and fill a pickup bed by just picking them up from the roadside.

Puller—Over in Mississippi, as in much of Arkansas, you have the common box turtle (Three-toed Box Turtle). These in the article are Ornate Box Turtles, a Prarie and grassland species. They do not occur in Mississippi.

Surprised Mr. Rucker now lives in Montana instead of the Southeast. Usually as we get older we move to warmer climes, not the other way around.

I first heard of him and his Boykin Spaniels around 2006, when he was helping researchers in Oak Ridge TN find eastern box turtles. They're not rare, but difficult for humans to locate in our dense forests.

My golden retriever used to point them out to me on walks (along with everything else under the sun) through the woods, but never tried to pick one up.
