This happened not too far from where I live. I know one of the families involved. It hasn't yet been determined what the teens were doing at some oilfield storage tanks or what caused caused the explosion at 3:30 a.m. today. There is an ongoing investigation going on by several different agencies. There was a small item about the incident at hattiesburgamerican.com | Hattiesburg American | Hattiesburg news, community, entertainment, yellow pages and classifieds. Serving Hattiesburg, MS. and should be an even larger article in the Sunday paper.

That's kind of disturbing. I wonder what those teens were up to? Hope you'll fill us in on details as they become known.

When I was in the 8th grade, a group of kids from our high school had made a regular habit of sitting on top of an oil storage tank and getting high. All is fine as long as the wind is blowing and keeping the natural gas dissipated... One calm day and they leveled a HUGE area. A few of them died, and the survivors were terribly scarred.

"Maybe stealing drip gas, dont ask how I know about this"
My first thought also--I know because we used to burn it in the truck we used on the oil lease.

I raised 5 boys, 3 of my own and 2 from a marriage. I live with my 17 year old son now. I am not suprised at ANYTHING that teenage boys get into. Their ability to be where they are not supppose to be and to do what they are not suppose to do is almost unlimited.

Until they learn that dad was right, it is a crap shoot. Most learn it quicker if they join the military. That woke my oldest son up real fast. He now says that he realizes what I went through with work and all and wonders how I did it.

Funny how a Dad goes from cretin to genius in a few short years of the real world, isn't it?

Sad to hear of this though. This stuff is never a good thing....

I always hated having to deal with these situations. The young men evidently lit a match or lighter near the distillate tank which had very little liquid in it,but the fumes are highly ignitable and the ignition source caused a consderable explosion. From what I heard, there was no perimeter security to keep people out. The company is based out of Baton Rouge and I feel confident litigation will be pending.
