On Saturday I bought a lovely 629-3 5", Classic, complete package, on lay-away.

This morning I went in to pick it up. After all the paperwork is done and the gun is in the bag Tom, a clerk, pulls out an 8 3/8" SS Revolver. "I did not see this come in.." It is a 629-4 Classic Dx but without box or papers and with small original combat grips.

I had read the thread about 1990s Smiths are good investment. Basically Classic were made over a period of years but the Classic Dx was made for only one year.

One Dx sold for $2,500.00 at auction (complete package) b/c two people both wanted it. Not your average auction.

I look on the tag and the price is only $750.00 OTD Hmm? Since I would be buying two guns today I asked for a break and got it for $725.00 OTD price. I had to just put it in lay-away.

How did I do? :D:D:D:D:rolleyes:

If I had let that deal go I would be drummed off the Forums, banned for life.

So now I'll have sell a gun or two. I have a Nickel 3" 36 ND, pinned that might sell quickly. I'll research it. I am going off topic here.

Ridgewalker,

I was surprised that such small stocks came with the behemoth. They would seem more applicable to a model 60 2".

Oh, one more thing, I wasn't 25 feet past the front door before I started my happy dance.

Yup, that's a buy it now!
Kinda deal.
The DX's started with the dash 3 (early 90's) and ended with the dash 6 in 2002. They are know to be very accurate. In factory test firing of the new classic series (full lugg 629's) some guns produced outstanding groups, due to tighter cylinder throats and more care in cylinder throat to bore alignment. These gun then went back on the floor and where marked DX. They packaged them with a few extra front sights, combats and rubber grips, plus the factory test target and of course a higher price. The dash 6's are considered the most rare, with very few made during the beginning of the -6 series.
I think any of the DX guns can be considered, the crown jewel of production 629's. Your gun should be a fantastic performer on the range.
Congratulations on a great score.
Here is a nib dash 6.

The 5" DX guns were only made one year. The other barrel length DX guns were made for several years.

Regardless, any DX is a great score!

Nothing wrong with a pre lock classic in 5" either, they are considered by many as the ideal barrel length.

Congrats oh the nice findings
You are lucky, 2 on the same day!!!!
I have been looking for a blue 5" DX (off topic) for a long time. Lost one in a GB 2 weeks ago. It went to high for my wallet.

This is the sort of thing that makes it very difficult to be happy for the good fortunes of others. Now, 629 5" right now gets my attention no matter what, and I'm very...happy...for you. But it is simply amazing to me that the big DX is also one I've been tracking on funbroker, too. So that makes me even...happier for you.

Really. Honest!

Very seriously though, enjoy them to fullest, smart shopper!
