“TX” marking on 28-2 Highway Patrolman

Does the box label specify Target Hammer (TH) and Target Trigger (TT)? Just curious.

Here is a pic

I'd also guess a driver license number; it's a common way to ID a personal item and much better than a SSN to preserve personal info.

That the box is not checked to target hammer or trigger tells me they are probably semi target sizes. Is the trigger smooth? it looks like a .400" width, as does the hammer. SCSW says either a .265" grooved trigger or .400" smooth trigger, and a .400" hammer spur was what they came with. My M28-2 is a year later than yours and has the smooth trigger and semi target hammer. I don't have the box for it though. Your stocks are not original, though, the box would have a "T" where the "S" is.

Yours looks to be practically unfired. The picture where you have the yoke open very clearly shows the underside of the top strap and there is no indication of a flame cut there at the rear of the FC. It takes a while to leave a burn mark of any kind that won't clean off, but that looks untouched.

Edit: A second look does show a very fine burn mark, corresponds with a mild turn line, so it's had a "few" rounds through it. Very nice looking revolver.

Yeah, it’s really clean. Been shot some and has some turn marks on the cylinder but it’s in really nice condition and the box looks new. The trigger has grooves and seems to be the wider one too.

Looks like someone etched a driver's license number into the crane. Many police departments offered free electro pencils for such use. The DL number helped the cops to catch crooks. People would etch their driver's license number into car parts, radios, tape players and of course guns.

Somewhere out there are a couple of guns with my SS number on them from about that time. What can I say? I was young, and even dumber than I am now. At least I had enough sense to put them under grips, forearms and such. Later, I figured out it was a pretty stupid thing to do at all.

As best I can remember, at one time, Virginia used your SS number as your drivers license number. Heck, I remember having my SS number on my personal checks.

Picked up another S&W revolver this week and wondering if anyone knows what the hand etched “TX6077058” is for? Looks to be from 1972 and was told that it was used by a Texas PD or Sheriffs department. Just curious if anyone else has come across this and knows for sure because the seller was unsure.

My SWAG is that the number is a Texas DL issued sometime after 1966 and before they added the "0" or "00" at the beginning. Mine started out as 603****. Hope this helps.

Most likely a Texas DL number of prior owner. Used to be it was recommended that personal property be marked for identification and some PDs even loaned out electro-pencil engravers for people to do this with. DLs and SSNs were most commonly found. Really stupid because if an item were stolen it would be entered in NCIC by SN and checked by that if recovered! I have a 1951/- M&P with a Utah DL electro-pencilled under the frame window, but the price was right when bought over 30 years ago.

My Texas driver's license number was 3191286, it is a number that I memorized and knew well. I got mine in 1972; then I moved away from the state and got licenses elsewhere. Eventually I returned to Texas and then they gave me a new 12 digit number!

Many folks etched their SSN in everything and anything for the same reason however this one has a TX in front of it and seven digits so that's what it is.

Bubba's Texas Drivers License Number. He is from Luckenbach.

I know nothing about TX drivers license numbers, but the etching is very neatly done and in my opinion not a property room or evidence marking. My experience with those type of markings are that they were crudely done and generally in a prominent location like the side plate - not carefully placed like shown in photo.
I’m voting with others that a prior owner marked it with his D/L number. My Department's Crime Prevention Unit used to loan out engravers as part of a nationwide “Operation ID” program. That was in the 70s / 80s. I used one of them to mark my last name and department name under the grip of my model 60 and 65 both of which I no longer have.
