When I got my DL in 1969 it was seven numbers and later on they added a 0 to the front of the number.
You are right. I remember that now.

Does the box label specify Target Hammer (TH) and Target Trigger (TT)? Just curious.
Here is a pic
I'd also guess a driver license number; it's a common way to ID a personal item and much better than a SSN to preserve personal info.
That the box is not checked to target hammer or trigger tells me they are probably semi target sizes. Is the trigger smooth? it looks like a .400" width, as does the hammer. SCSW says either a .265" grooved trigger or .400" smooth trigger, and a .400" hammer spur was what they came with. My M28-2 is a year later than yours and has the smooth trigger and semi target hammer. I don't have the box for it though. Your stocks are not original, though, the box would have a "T" where the "S" is.
Yours looks to be practically unfired. The picture where you have the yoke open very clearly shows the underside of the top strap and there is no indication of a flame cut there at the rear of the FC. It takes a while to leave a burn mark of any kind that won't clean off, but that looks untouched.
Looks like someone etched a driver's license number into the crane. Many police departments offered free electro pencils for such use. The DL number helped the cops to catch crooks. People would etch their driver's license number into car parts, radios, tape players and of course guns.
Picked up another S&W revolver this week and wondering if anyone knows what the hand etched “TX6077058” is for? Looks to be from 1972 and was told that it was used by a Texas PD or Sheriffs department. Just curious if anyone else has come across this and knows for sure because the seller was unsure.
Somewhere out there are a couple of guns with my SS number on them from about that time.
