I bought a Model 27-2 at a local gun show today. Original box, paperwork, tissue paper, grease paper and an unopened tool kit. The blue finish is 100%; it looks to be unfired.

The only issue is the magna grips. They have no serial number on them. The box label indicates an "S" in the Stock location.

Could these grips be a late Friday afternoon assembly, or possibly purchased after-market? They fit very tight, like they were made for this particular revolver.

Please educate me; you always do. Thanks.

There came a time when numbering stock were hit and miss. S means standard stocks so the magnas are correct. If they fit well and are in the complete package you describe , I'm sure they are original.

Are they diamond magna ? I don't think non diamond are numbered, but I have been wrong before. Congrats on your purchase.

Thanks for your instantaneous replies. I wasn't aware that numbering the right half was hit & miss. They fit perfectly, as they were difficult to remove.

Thanks to your replies I will sleep better tonight.

Not so much "hit and miss," they were mostly hits but at some point, I forget exactly when, mid to late '70s maybe, S&W stopped stamping SNs on their magna stocks. If you provide your serial number someone here will confirm the timeframe and whether or not your -2 would likely have shipped with numbered stocks. If yours is a late gun, just before S&W stopped P&R, your stocks may not have been numbered.

Post up a pick of your new 27-2, we'd like to see it...

It was made before 1975 if it came in a labeled box. Magna's supplied on guns were numbered at that time. In '75, target stocks, a presentation case and a target trigger/hammer became standard.

Non-numbered Magna stocks were sold as accessories. It's more likely they're replacements, rather than a factory oversight.

A close up photo of the butt with the grips attached might help. Originals were fitted (sanded) o the gun before the finishes were applied. The right stock was numbered so they could be reunited.

Here's a photo of the 27-2.

... Yes, the pistol came in its original blue cardboard box.

Mark,
That photo doesn't really help. We need a close up of the butt to see how they're fitted.

A photo of the end label would also be helpful. Interesting that the gun has a target trigger and hammer, but not target stocks.

Agreed, maybe it was ordered that way, but I'd assume if it had TT and TH, it would also have the TS. SN should tell us more.

Nice looking revolver, whatever it's wearing.

Sorry for the delay in getting a photo of the butt posted; here it is. The serial number tag on the end of the box lists two "T"s on the hammer and trigger spaces, along with an "S" in the stocks area.

Thanks again for your responses. Even after 50 years of collecting I still learn a lot from you folks.

Mark

That's a lovely gun, but the stocks don't appear to be fitted. As I previously mentioned, it was done on a belt sander before the finishes were applied.

It wouldn't affect the value to most buyers. A photo of thee label would be helpful.
