Under the pillow

Given the current rash of terrorists, home invasions, mob hits and zombies, my head never rests easy unless there is a Glock 19, seven extra magazines, a Mag Light, a Remington 870 with extended mag loaded with alternating slugs and buckshot and a machete under my pillow.

Did I mention I sleep in body armor?

WHOOP - WHOOP - WHOOP

Sarcasm alert! Sarcasm alert! That is all.

I generally sleep with one arm under the pillow so that wouldn't work for me. I wouldn't do it anyway.

Mine stays in the bottom night stand drawer that is opened about one inch. That way I have to slightly open the drawer to get the gun which is always cocked and ready to go. I want to have to make a very conscious movement/movements before touching the gun.

I use an alternative method:

I sleep with a snake under my pillow (a king snake). Then, if a bad guy breaks into my house at night, I'll just throw the snake at him. He'll then scream like a girl, allowing me time to grab whichever gun is closest to me. Heh, heh, heh. :D

Pretty sneaky, eh?? :D

I never take a gun to bed. however, my prefered method is not recommended for those that : sleepwalk or have pets or stay at a Howard Johnson.

As I often like to do, I search old threads to glean what I can from them and rarely walk away empty handed.

Honest to gosh.....

One night I was dreaming (I hoped) that an anaconda was wrapped around my neck and was choking me. I grabbed it and started trying to yank it off. I yanked and yanked, then I woke up and found that my left arm was wrapped around my neck and I was trying to yank my arm off with my right hand.

Now, who thinks that I should sleep with a gun under my pillow?

I would never stage a firearm like that.... way too easy for it to shift around or fall off the bed and not be there when you need it most.

Gun under my pillow? No way. I sleep with a woman that defines angry when awakened from a sound sleep. I would let the bad guy in...

I kept a wheel gun under my pillow for about four years. We had a guy called the East Area Rapist in the town and people did not realize he was in their bedroom until he woke them up. I never had a problem with it. We got security bars on our doors and windows in 1982 and I then put the gun in the drawer next to the bed.

I've been sleeping next to the same woman for 48 years and have no plans to change that. A Model 10 snub sits on my night stand secrued in an old police belt holster, no plans to change that either.

I'm a restless sleeper, frequently having to change position due to pain. There's no way a gun would stay accessible under my pillow.

I've lived alone for twenty-one years and slept alone for somewhat fewer but still quite a while, so no wuckers there. But the headboard of my bed has a shelf in it that holds a holstered 10-5 (currently on loan to a friend), and a J-frame in a Nemesis pocket holster is on the dresser next to the bed.

Actually I lied. I sleep with an elderly rat terrier who only barks if (a) he spots a cat or possum, or (b) there's somebody at the door. He's good at both.

I sleep in a double bed, and keep my hammerless revolver under the pillow I'm not using on the other side.
My rationale is, in the unlikely chance someone was quiet enough to get the drop on me, it wouldn't be as obvious what I was reaching for as it would be on the nightstand. Also, the gun wouldn't be visible until it was fired.
I don't find it to be unsafe.

I move around way too much for a gun under the pillow to work for me. I shove my holstered handgun under the edge of the mattress leaving the grip sticking out. It's within easy reach if I need it, and it's never fallen on the floor. I'm sure it would if I kept it under the pillow.

When I was just born (in 50s) my Dad slept with a 1911 between the mattress and box springs. The news was warning about a guy braking into homes, killing the parents and doing what he wanted in their homes.

He broke into our house about 2:00am one night coming down the hallway with a 38 in his hand. When he open my parents door with the windows blacked out in the bedroom and the hallway window curtains open he got blown down the hallway with the round hitting him center mass. When the police got there they found him 100 yards in the woods behind our home.
Having a gun mounted behind or in a night stand sounds like a better idea to me.
I am more worried about a firearm not being in a secured place then someone braking in.
