I spotted an absolutely beautiful 10-8 4" heavy barrel. The bluing is excellent minus a minuscule wear spot on either side of the muzzle, the action is very tight and timing and lock-up is good. No scratches, no rust and no buggered up screws. Extractor rod is free and smooth. It does have what appear to be original, at least period correct target stye stocks which, not knowing alot about K frames or the model 10's Im not sure they belong on the gun. Did the 10's come with the target style or the magna style stocks or both.
The price tag is what really grabbed my eye, $550. Is this in line with what yall would expect to pay?

Most Model 10s shipped with magnas; that's not to say some weren't special ordered with target stocks, just few and far between.

But as Tanners Owner correctly notes, stocks are easily swapped; it shouldn't affect your purchasing decision unless you require an all factory original set-up, in which case you'd need a factory letter.

For the condition you describe, and assuming function is entirely correct, $550 isn't a bad price.

The price is probably about average these days. I paid $350 for a very finish challenged 10-6 in August 2022. A retired Police Capts gun. Had it bead blasted and reblued at a very reasonable cost. $550 for one in excellent condition is good in my opinion.

Our guys routinely switched out the factory Magnas for factory target grips—or Pachmyers— on our issued Model 64s back in the 70s and 80s. Decent price, definitely not a deal-breaker.

The price tag is $550, but since the stocks are likely replacements, I would definitely use that as a bargaining tool. Try offering $400 cash, that's a low ball offer, but you never start at what you are willing to pay. If you get it for $500 or less, you won.

Thats exactly what I was thinking as well.

I asked here because going to some place like GB and the like makes every gun look expensive
The $550 tag was about what I saw there too so honestly I figured coming back here Id see most people saying it was too high. I was wrong.
Somebody really did take good care of the gun. The shop owner said it was his when I asked if it was there on consignment but I dont know if he meant it was always his or he made a trade for it etc. Regardless, its in good shape, especially the bluing.

I just remembered that I took a pic of the tag and it has what it says is the SN, 11D5671. Seems an odd SN but if thats what it is can anyone find out anything about it?

Time flies, and prices soar! Yes it has been years ago, but picked up a 10-8 that was an Aussie Police turn in. Price before shippine was $269. Not the prettiest gun but functioned just fine.
Then there is the 10-5 snub that I bought for $329 shipped. I had to try a K snub because J frames were just wrong for me. Bob

10-8s are an "insider's secret" gun. Apparently, S&W refreshed their tooling when they started that iteration with resulting close tolerances. I know mine was an honest 1-1/2" at 25 yards gun when I could see that well, and I used it for two years when I was seriously competing in IDPA and carried it for quite a while as my EDC gun (and still do occasionally). Jump on it if you haven't already.

Ah, thanks Chuck. Very interesting tidbit of info. I know I was amazed at hot tight everything was on it. I didnt have a feeler with me( wasnt "revolver shopping ") but too I thought that the b/c gap couldnt be more than .004, looked TIGHT in there.
I decided to call the guy and asked him to put it up until I can get back over there. He agreed.

$550 is a decent price in today's market. I collect Tens and anything under $600 I at least look at. Target grips were a pretty common add on.
