Evening yall! I came across a rather unique 5903 in the classifieds, and wanted to get your thoughts. I'm not familiar with porting jobs, however I feel quite confident that this was a home made project. I've included photos for your evaluation.

I can't even begin to think what replacing that barrel would cost - or even if any gunsmith would take the job. Are those "ports" actually drilled all the way through to the barrel? Oy. Other than that I would also agree that it's pretty ugly - both in design and workmanship.

Buy it cheap and replace slide assy and barrel - I see them frequently on various auction places incl Classifieds here - or walk away (maybe run?)

It's not even worth it at this point. I have plenty of nice ones in the stables, this one can be the ugly duckling. Also yes the ports are drilled all the way through, but as you can think it's not the best craftsmanship.

I'd also like to ask the experts on the specifics for collecting ported S&W pistols. I'm generally used to collecting only un-modded factory guns, however this was a foray into another aspect (admittedly it wasn't the best choice but hey a Smith is a Smith). Any specifics I should look for, or perhaps major players like Magna-port? I'd like to use this as a learning opportunity for collecting going forward.

If I were looking for a Gen 3 wide body I'd offer a very, very low price for that one and replace the complete upper which, as somebody said, can be had fairly reasonably.
That looks like the work of the infamous Lee brothers, Home and Ugg. At least the damage is limited to the slide and barrel (or is it?)

Froggie

Frame is pretty good actually. Previous owners modified the trigger to have an extremely short reset, but with a screw… Pretty sure I can get that piece out and the lower frame should be a good catalyst for rebuild.

I'm not certain considering how you worded this post.

I would say that if you are asking or suggesting if it is possible that Mag-Na-Port did this work, my answer is that Mag-Na-Port would almost certainly be insulted if you asked them or suggested it might be possible that they did this. I believe their answer would come amongst a flurry of deep belly laughs if it were suggested to them that they would ship out such a monstrosity.

I give the creator some credit for thinking up an abomination and putting it in to motion, I guess. Mounting a front sight directly to the barrel is an idea I wouldn't have guessed.

The shaping of the decock lever is interesting. The Pachmayr 3rd Gen grip is horrendous, but that thing was ugly and poorly conceived before this guy installed it.

I hate the magazine floor plate also.

And all of this nonsense on an alloy frame pistol seems like a curious choice.

It's definitely interesting for a discussion on the forum, but some guns are better talked about than they are in real life. This one is an example of that.

Don't forget the range report I'm very curious.
Something like that wasn't done for sh**s and giggles.
Some of the finest shooting pistols came from concept.
There are now about 10 or 15 Mustang concept cars that never hit the market that are worth millions.

Oh no I wasn't implying anything other than this was a home made project. I've seen Magnaport work before and it's clean as hell. This one here is an ugly duckling for sure, and the work is pretty rough. As for the pachmayr, I had those lying around and wanted to try em on. Fun fact they are uncomfortable as hell. Now the base plate on that mag I got from a gentleman selling a 6590 (RSR if I remember correctly), and thought it looked interesting. Piece will probably just sit in my safe for an eternity or be used for the frame.

I'm interested too to be honest. Curious if it'll be accurate.

I like it but I am a strange person.

Somebody did the old Rat Rod special on that old pistol.
How does it shoot? We will need an update on the range day.

LMAO, that occurred to me last night also. We don't have a picture from that angle but I have an image in my mind that the pistol is running like 75% of a barrel bushing...

WOW, talk about trying to make a sow's ear into a silk purse. Maybe that was a pre- P/C offering... They used to have 1911 barrels that were actually made like that, but that one is ingenious. If it holds together. I don't have any welding or machining skills. I actually love this kind of stuff. Always reminds me of the old NRA magazines where guys would send in the instructions and photos of whatever contraption or better way of making a self heating truck camper from the exhaust pipe. Before govt regulations stifled most of the country's imaginative thinking. It does not bother me at all to see these common type guns experimented on. If it was a PC 5906 I would say what a shame.
I (think) the decocker is an old Ed Brown part, and was at one time on early PC pistols.
Like to get a better look at that hammer..

My first thought was that slide can't possibly lock up tight being cut like that, but I've been wrong before!
