There is a small T-shaped piece of orange polmer/plastic loose in the box my 15-22 came in. Can someone tell me what it is for? Or did it get dropped in the box by mistake? It's not mentioned in the manual, and it wasn't in the plastic bag with the lock and sight wrench.

It's called a "Chamber Flag" you insert the round portion into the chamber and close the bolt. It visually signifies the gun has been safety checked.

It fits in the chamber to indicate an empty weapon. You'll see these in new weapons. Threw mine away

Just got my 15-22P back from S&W due to some warranty work. It had one in it when it came back.
The local range officer likes seeing them when checking firearms in at he range; but they are not required.

It is called a "chamber flag" and it is inserted into the chamber and the bolt is carefully closed so that the "flag" portion is sticking out to show the rifle is unloaded. As you will likely never use it, just keep it with the box and papers to pass on to the next person in the event you sell or trade the rifle.
