I believe that he was a Marine vet but not a Viet Nam vet. This happened in the summer of 1966 and LBJ had only started putting troops in heavy numbers in Nam since the summer before. Earlier we only had advisor groups there.

I do believe that they got guys out there with their hunting rifles to try and get him. Back then they didn't have SWAT Snipers and the local cops didn't have anything that would work.
