Unprofessional Business Card

Recently was given a business card that showed lack of professionalism because of its errors.

1) The e-mail address printed is no longer valid.
2) The web address printed is no longer valid.

I tried to send an e-mail and it was a failure.

I called the cell phone number - amazing it did work.

Explained that my attempt to send e-mail had failed.
Asked for an e-mail to be sent to me.
E-mail from a completely different address. ("***@yahoo.com" instead of the cards "***@"organization".net")

Obviously OLD cards.

Lost credibility.

I deal with this a LOT in my business.

I'll get a business card from someone professionally dressed asking a bunch of questions about security, work schedules, etc etc etc. Stuff that a salesman or courier would not ask.

Of course, I direct their comments to the appropriate parties and say nothing. Usually theses folks are stopped at the building directory where they will spend an inordinate amount of time for a building with two companies in it.

On these occassions, I make note of the what the person drives (it is usually a rental car). THEN I check the business card. Two such individuals (who were very sinister types) and had business cards that gave the address of their "large facility" as a neighborhood grocery store that had been closed for three years.

Anyone can make business cards at home these days. I do myself. BUT when someone has false or outdated information on them, then they should ALWAYS be suspect of devilitry especially in this day and age.

I owned several businesses and managed several other. I worked with hundreds, literally, of individuals and businesses. I came the conclusion decades ago that 50% of individuals and businesses are just there to do the minimum to get by. Then, 40% are professional and do a good job and care about their profession and act accordingly. Of the remaining percentages, 5% are the experts in their fields. Then there is the remaining 5% are the ones that wrote the book on their profession. Having been around and working with multi-millionaires and on multi-million dollar project, the most professional man I ever met was a school janitor. Doesn't matter if you manage a billion dollar empire or sweep floors, be the top 5%.

Years back one of my friends was starting a small business. He was a welder and decent auto mechanic.

He ordered a bunch of business cards. The printer goofed and instead of the name being right made the card say "precision welling and auto repair" Printer offered my buddy the cards at about 40% of what the charge was to be. Friend took them and just used a pen to make welling- welding!:)

We use to joke about a local car dealer that would hire anyone to be a sales person. He figured they and their parents would buy a car before he had to fire them. The gave them cards with a blank space where they could write their name.

AMEN!

For my .02 USD

The smartest man I ever knew had finished third grade,
but he continued to read and learn.
He could solve problems, not just look for answers in books.
His common sense was also a factor.

I bought a program for printing business cards on my computer for $10 on close out. I printed about 30 with my SASS number and Alias.

A friend had a mishap on the rifle range that damaged 2 high end Leupold scopes in 3 days. I printed up a few cards for him. I had him as CEO of dropoptics.com!

You can make a card for anyone, anywhere, and anytime. You can be an "International Consultant" or a brothel's Madame!

These can be very personal or just a gag. My friend with the broken scops, died a few years ago and was cremated. In his shirt pocket was his Drop Optics business cards, that's as close to taking it with you as it gets!

I have a collection of business cards that I got over the 30 years I've been in this business.

Every now and then I'll take them out and update them.

This person died. This person retired. This person changed jobs. This company is out of business.

Change is the only constant in life.

Sort of on the topic of unprofessional cards. Also, please, be patient, I go on and on about boats, I'm trying to be brief.

Some years back a fella had a custom built steel expedition motor yacht that could take you in safety anywhere in the world that had 6' of water. This was the real deal, no compromises from design to fit-out. He put big money not into lavish finishes but commercial grade or better everything. Spares and back-ups for everything. The yacht was the very definition of well found.

His broker had been trying to sell it in all the magazines. I saw it at the Seattle boat show, the broker was there turning away the riff-raff but let me on because I'm cool and all that. Amazing boat, you could easily access all maintenance points. This is uber rare on even the best yachts. Be patient, I'm trying!

The owners were on board and I pointed out to them the email address on the flyers and full color magazine ads were American. Inquires were not reaching his Canadian broker. Who knows how many interested parties couldn't make contact?
The owner glared at the broker who turned white. I left.
This broker stood to make a six figure commission and yet made that basic of a mistake!

Were I well to do I'd have bought it in an instant!
Oh well, I pick up my brand new 17' sail-n-oar boat Monday.

Over 20 years ago some guy was hitting on my girlfriend. He gave her his business card that he was a Deputy District Attorney for Santa Clara County in San Jose. When she passed his card to me, I thought I knew all the Deputy DA's, and this name was not one of them. I made a call and was told that this guy had been a Deputy DA for a short time years before, but he had been fired. I told her that the next time this monkey-butt came around, this is what she needed to do.....

I don't understand this. There is no difficulty in emailing between addresses that originate in different countries. E.g., .jp for Japan or .sg for Singapore, etc.

Do you mean that the broker had a different (incidentally, Canadian) email address and therefore potential buyers could not reach him at the (incidentally, American) email address listed in the brochure and other advertising?

I always found the urinal is a good place for those cards. Makes a good target. Just be sure it's face up so everyone has something to read.

The broker's listed website should have ended in .ca, the ads had .com

Classy. The janitor must have some real respect for you.

I had a new sales rep give me "his" card.
It was the previous sales rep's card with the new guys return address label stuck over the old guys name.
