df53141 thread gave me some inspiration, so I composed an email and sent it to both my Senators. I just hope I don't get arrested for threatening a public official. After I composed it, I thought that some other members might want to use it to contact their senators. Please feel free to edit for your state and respond with any suggestions on additional content, but by all means send something to your Senators and if needed to your Representative.

From data generated by GunPolicy.org , it shows that gun homicides in the US is decreasing. For instance, the annual rate of firearm homicide per 100,000 population was 7.07 in 1993 and 3.6 in 2011. Also, the rate of firearm possession per 100,000 is growing, currently is 88.8 firearms per 100 people.

The FBI recently released its Crime in The United States statistics for 2010. Overall, murders in the U.S. have decreased steadily since 2006, dropping from 15,087 to 12,996. Firearms murders, which made up 67 percent of all murders in the U.S. in 2010, have followed this trend, decreasing by 14 percent.

At the same time that firearms murders were dropping, gun sales are surging. In 2009, FBI background checks for guns increased by 30 percent over the previous year, while firearms sales in large retail outlets increased by almost 40 percent. The number of applications for concealed carry permits jumped across the country as well. The number of firearms sales continued to grow in the last 4 years.

As far as your efforts that will continue to gut the 2nd Amendment, when the Brady Bill was being pushed, the FBI was against it because they determined that 11 of 13 firearms used in crimes were obtained illegally and the bill expensive process and waiting period wouldn't do anything to reduce crime. Time has proved them correct.

Michigan is a sportsman’s state. Hunting and shooting is very popular among residents. There are varying statistics out there on the number of households that own guns, but with long guns and handguns included, it is far above 50% of the state’s households.

This new attack on the 2nd Amendment is nothing more than a politically driven agenda using the sad news from Shady Hook Elementary to advance your attacks on legal gun ownership. I have read your position and totally disagree with most aspects of your position. Nothing that is proposed will do anything to stop unstable violent people from repeating these horrific shooting sprees. I think you know that, but your party’s line is more important to you than your conscience and constituents. I would not be surprised if you are one of those who propose to scrap the entire Constitution and replace it with more bureaucracy and control of the American public than ever before.

Here is what you will accomplish if, heaven forbid, your proposals should come to pass. You will add substantial costs to legal gun ownership through background checks, fees, use taxes, ffl license holder fees, and burdensome procedures. You are prohibiting gun owners from selling so called assault weapons and magazines that they legally obtained, costing legal gun owners millions of dollars across the country. Oh, I guess they should not have bought them in the first place and can simply throw them away when they are done with them. By the way – 75% of target shooters at my gun club shoot military style weapons for enjoyment and entertainment.

Lastly, what effect will your proposed rules have on criminals and crazed copycat shooter? I will tell you - NOTHING! Please enjoy your current term in the Senate, since I and all that I know will do everything in our power to make this term your last in the next election. You are underestimating the numbers and power of gun owners and clear thinking residents of this fine state.

What will work? Communicating all local and state information to the ATF, stiffer penalties for gun crime and illegal gun ownership, sharing information on those with major psychiatric conditions to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) and legislation to force the mental health community to share concerns for potentially violent persons. Everything else will do nothing but help to destroy the liberties offered by the 2nd Amendment, but by many of your colleagues’ admissions that is just what they are trying to do.

glowe,

Thanks for posting this... I have been accumulating words and trying to string together a cohesive letter to send to Levin and Stabinow... They both deserve to be removed from office...violation of oath of office, as I see it... I am not even going to wait for my form letters...

I will do some doctoring, you have done a very fine job putting a cohesive, well written letter...

Thanks,
Paul

I emailed them too. (I'm from MI as well.) If you're interested I can send you Levin's response to me - it was not at all what I wanted. But what can you expect? He co-sponsored Feinstein's bill.

Well I got my first response that was just as disappointing as I suspected. I found no connection or response to my original submission, so it is obviously the canned response.

Thank you for contacting me about the tragic and senseless violence in Newtown, Connecticut. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and concerns with me.

If there is anything that deeply unites Americans across the country it is our love for our children and grandchildren and our desire to keep them safe. In the wake of the heartbreaking tragedy at Sandy Hook elementary, all of us must come together to determine what steps can be taken to protect our children. That means discussing how we can strengthen our gun laws to help stop attacks like this from happening again, while protecting responsible gun ownership and preserving our hunting heritage. It also means strengthening mental health services, and focusing on the broader culture of violence in the media and our society. These solutions may not be easy, but one thing should be clear – complacency and inaction until the next attack must not be an option.

Thank you again for contacting me. Please continue to keep me informed about issues of concern to you and your family.

Sincerely,

Debbie Stabenow

I got a response from both Levin and Stabenow. I offered to help them to retire from there current jobs if the continue to follow their current anti-gun stance. We need to also contact the NRA about them. Levin has In the past been pro gun I think.

Glowe I receive the same response from her and Carl Leven. Sure the have a standard form letter.

Levin has In the past been pro gun I think.

Levin has never been pro-gun. He gets an F grade from both the NRA and GOA. He is, in fact, one of the biggest gun-grabbers in government.
