UPDATE: Pre-WWII 44 S&W date/data

Nice old HE 3rd. A 4" to boot. Weren't most Wolf & Klar guns in 5"? I can't wait for the "after" shots. I think you will be pleased at how the aforementioned techniques clean that baby up.

Maj45K, did it look like the one in the front in this pic? That's a 3rd Model in the 33500 serial range - ca. 1929-'30.

That bottom one is beautiful!!!!

Lee ... Thanks for confirming that 4” barrel length revolvers at this point in production did not have the patent dates, etc., on the barrel. I’ll be getting a check out in tomorrow’s mail and then try to remain patient waiting to see what additional information we can learn from Roy’s letter. Also appreciate that based on the posted pictures I did ok price wise.
Tony

Andy ...
Thanks for your post and the picture of your 3rd Model which is spectacular. There's no way mine will clean up anything like yours but I'm not complaining. Looking back at your posts from when you got yours, it looks like you may have now settled on walnut grips rather than the ivory set you had at one time. Those ivory set were certainly jaw-droppers that's for sure.
If you're up for a few more questions, I'd like to PM you. Tony

Returned home yesterday to find a letter from Roy dated 6 February, 2019, providing the following information regarding this revolver ...

"We have researched your Smith & Wesson .44 Hand Ejector Third Model (Model of 1926) Wolf & Klar Co., caliber .44 S&W Special, revolver in company records which indicate that your handgun, with serial number 34693 was shipped from our factory on June 6, 1930, and delivered to Wolf & Klar Co., Fort Worth. The records indicate that this revolver was shipped with a 4 inch barrel, nickel finish, and with walnut silver medallion square butt grips. This order contained 22 units in the above configuration and they were billed at the wholesale price of $21.90 each."

Unfortunately I've been unable to get this HE cleaned up but hope to do so soon, after which I'll get a few pictures posted. Thanks for all who have contributed to this thread and my education on the subject.

I certainly can't disagree with any enthusiasm. The 3rd series started in 1926 at 28 and change (28358). That gun was part of the first shipment---75 guns, all 5", all nickel, shipped January 27,1927.
Ralph Tremaine

Another early one - 286xx, shipped March 8, 1927. I can't see numbers on the grips.

Well-used and nice silvery blue finish.

In case you weren't aware, the first shipment of 3rd model .44s went to Wolf & Klar on January 27, 1927. It consisted of 75 5" nickel revolvers. I was blessed to find one from that 1st shipment back around 2005 or 2006.

Congratulations on that find. A friend said his favorite gun is a 44 special, so I'm looking forward to trying it out.
