UPDATED***Over Reacted last Night, Probably Over Thinking It Today.

Long answer with additional information:

Any way if it has always been mention I apologize but what was the gun you drew?

Well on this forum you know it's going to be a Smith right?

Normally when I get home from work I’m home for the night so I take of my uniform and put on sweats, so normally I don’t have anything on that would support a holster.

At home I keep a 6906 close at hand and I when I walk the dogs for the last time of the night I normally put it in my coat pocket. This habit may be why I put the gun in my pocket instead of reholstering while I was retreating.

On this night I had just come home from church and was wearing my belt gun, a 4006, 2 reloads, a CRKT folder, a flashlight and a multi tool.

I don't see that as prudent or helpful.

Consider the difference in -

"I think I just heard gunshots coming from the area of XYZ"

vs

"About a half hour ago, I think I might have heard gunshots coming from the area of XYZ"

There's nothing wrong with calling in gunshots that eventually turn out to be firecrackers or turn out to be non-findable (as most are). But you might just call it in, cops arrive, and find a wounded victim. Or they might find an armed bad guy.

Even in the most typical scenario, arrived, unable to locate, back in service, the cops will begin to see that "we get a lot of calls about gunshots over at XYZ apartments". They'll patrol that area more. It's never the opposite "Oh we keep getting calls about gunshots but can't ever find anything. We'll quit patrolling that area".

I think you did exactly what you should have done. Stayed safe, stayed alert, knew where you were at, called it in, went home with Fido that night.

Sgt Lumpy

Had I not stopped in the stairwell I would have been home in two minutes, so there wouldn’t have been that much of a lag in calling 911. The police apparently didn’t show up for about an hour so that two minutes wasn’t going to change anything.

I think you did very well. I might have gone for cover first maybe drawing on the way. I would let 911 know I was there and what I was wearing and my location. My Debit card has " see I.D." on the back. 99% of the time they ask for it. You went right to condition orange most people would have gone with the firecracker excuse. Glad you are safe. Its normal to refine in your mind it after it happens.

It's a tough choice just to decide to investigate it further or not, could be an innocent civilian in need of help or it could be a drug deal gone wrong and in that case go ahead and kill yourselves and I have no issues walking away. I think the majority of us here would want to help if it was someone in need of help even though we are under no obligation to even though we would be equipped to defend ourselves if need be.

FWIW There was another shots fired call on my street last night

Around 0115 Sunday 1/12/14 someone did a magazine dump on the street just south of my apartments (1st and Sandtrap) CSPD was in the area and checked it out. They found several shell casings in the road. Witnesses said they saw a black SUV leaving the area. As Sgt Lumpy pointed out we may get a few more patrols around here now.

And I, uber tacticool high drag, low speed, mall ninja that I am slept through the whole thing. :D

Colorado Springs.

It's about as bad here now as it was when I lived in Houston in '84.

I lived in Hollywood before that but everyone was like totally waaaaaaay too stoned to be like shooting guns duuuuuuude

Environment is so critical. If I'm out in the yard, my dog would be too, but we don't walk him, he is free to come and go as he pleases, except for the radio fence that keeps him on our property. Another difference, hearing a gunshot I would automatically think "wonder if he got that coyote....?"

I don't think I ever want to live in the city.

As to the OP, situation this summer involving a highly agitated bobcat while wifey and I were walking. Broad daylight. Yes, we both drew our primary weapons. That is an expected and respected response to a perceived threat. LEO response time is at least 20 minutes to several hours. You'd better be prepared to handle it yourself.

You'd be shocked ... if you have an android tablet there is a free app that streams police radio.
You can listen to several different PD's and quickly learn that less than 5% of the goings on ever make the news.

Omaha has a Shot Spotter system covering the north side.
Listen for about an hour and you will hear at least one radio call in that time. Its kinda alarming, and its far more a war zone than anyone seems to talk about.

Grew up on 65th and Lafeyette in Omaha. It's a great place to be from .....far from
