I field stripped my Mom's Shield 9 EZ, but I couldn't seem to get the slide back on all the way, it wouldn't come back past the last set of grooves despite the spring being rotated properly. I tried several times but wasn't successful, so I ended up pulling the trigger while I was putting it on. The hammer released and not the hammer is up with the slide forward on the gun.

Sounds like you had the grip safety depressed while trying to put the slide back on. A pic would help to see the current condition it is in.

That could be it, I'm not all that familiar with the Shield. I've uploaded some pictures.

Will the slide move at all?

Only about 1/2 cm back, where the slide lock groove on the upper lines up with the takedown lever and causes it to partially rotate. But I can't get it to rotate more than that with the frame in the way.

What is the "barrel plug" for?

Could that be causing the issue? Never known anyone to install any kind of barrel plug.

May have to use some force to get the lever rotated down. Thats a decision only you can make. May be best to contact S&W customer service for advice. I have been taking mine down and looking trying to figure it out, but not having much luck.

I saw in my EZ manual not to hold the grip safety during take down or assembly. One of the notes shows the following if that helps.
OP if needed, manuals can be downloaded from SW’s site if the original is gone. There are pix that could get your issue corrected.

From the manual:
NOTE: Do not depress the grip
safety (FIGURE 60) as this caus-
es the firing pin plunger lever to
interfere with the slide as it is
installed. Keeping tension off of
the grip safety allows the firing pin plunger lever to remain below the frame when installing the slide

Barrel Plug?!?!

I have been an active shooter, hunter and competitor since I was a young boy on the farm. Served in the Army too.

I can not begin to imagine what the barrel plug you refer to is and why you use it.

Please enlighten us.

I can imagine what it is. I just cant imagine why you'd dit if that is in fact what I'm thinking.

Could the OP's "barrel plug" be his term for the chamber flag?

The barrel plug is out, could get it to go together with it in, so I removed it, to simplify things, not that it gets in the way at all.

We use them all the time during training, Lenwood is most known for them, but BarrelBlok is also well known.

But let's not get side tracked. Any suggestions aside from forcing the takedown?

Don’t press the grip safety when taking apart or putting back together. The tab that comes up with the grip safety will flop up on its own if you are not holding the gun upright. With that tab down in the frame and the takedown lever in the proper position the slide should go on and push the hammer down as you go on.

Two things I have learned from this and other similar threads regarding the EZ guns.

1) Stay away from the grip safety during reassembly.

2) Never pull the trigger unless the slide is fully on or fully off.

Any suggestions with what I should do now since the slide is partially on, the takedown lever is up, and the hammer is down?

How much force did it take to rotate the takedown lever with it like that? I tried to simulate that with my 380ez and don’t see how to get it like that without really hogging it way harder than I would ever want to. Looks like you either have to rotate the takedown and push the slide on, or send it to smith and wesson.

Jared, Can you get something under the front face of the hammer (maybe the loop of a paperclip) to pull it back/up enough to re-cock the hammer? That may allow you to pull the the slide back far enough to get the 90' corner of the take-down lever to clear the slide lock notch in the slide or maybe even the takedown notch. That should allow you to then move the slide forward off the frame and start over again installing the slide WITHOUT contacting the grip safety.

Okay, I was able to get the takedown level down without forcing it, not really sure how, but it is down now.

I'm now easily able to move the slide:
From it's resting position with the rear of the slide lined up with the rear of the thumb safety (the picture)
To the point that the slide lock level is just slightly behind the slide lock notch.

It is clear that the hammer being forward is keeping the slide from moving further.

I do now have full access to the chamber and mag well from the top.

Any ideas on how to reset the hammer?

Tried hooking it with some picture hanging wire, but I can't seem to get it to pull back.
