Are you asking if anyone has used a different caliber upper on a Smith lower? If so, the answer is yes. Many have used the .300 blackout. No issues.

Lets see if some of the folks with the .300 uppers will chime in and give you some first hand experience. My friend runs a PSA .300 blackout on his Daniel Defense lower. Inexpensive upper on an expensive lower. He had the DD, and just bought the upper to use.

No, he didn't change the buffer. No part change was required. However, the DD comes from the factory with a heavy buffer, where my Sport came with the carbine buffer. I would probably go with a heavy buffer over the carbine buffer. I believe a heavy buffer would be required if firing suppressed, but don't quote me on that.

I have a .300BLK, mine is a S&W sku# 812012. It shoots just like it is supposed to, every time, where I aim it. I miss my target? Well, thats my fault. But, back to your question. The .300BLK upper I have is only different by two parts from a S&W sku# 811041 model 15T. Those two parts are the barrel and the flash hider. That is it. The bolt is the same, the hand guard is the same. My upper's even have same forge marks on them (I have a 15T).
If your looking to run a different caliber, The Blackout can be a great choice. Of the 75-80 parts on an AR style rifle, having to only change two parts to have something totally different made alot of sense to me.
Now the down side of a .300BLK. Ammo is not cheap. The lowest price that I have personal paid for cheap plinking ammo is $11 for 20 rounds. If you are a reloader, you can get the price down abit. I did spend $36 earlier this hunting season for a box(20) of Barnes ammo. Good stuff, 3/4" grouping at 100yds. But at $1.80 a round, a day at the range with Barnes get pricey fast.

If your running a suppressed .300BLK, I found it to be more about my gas setup than the buffer. Getting a rifle length gas system to run suppressed reliably can be difficult. The carbine gas system is in between great and workable. Some manufacture's do a better job than others. The pistol gas system is the best for the .300BLK ran suppressed.

I built my own upper so it would be exactly what I want, shoots just fine, the only different parts are the barrel and compensator (or flash hider). By the way you need to shoot a 300 blackout to appreciate it. I load supersonic for my fun but a suppressed rifle is where the caliber shines.

The ballistics depend on what your shooting. Subsonic or supersonic, this caliber does it both. That is one of the appeals of it. I have seen load data weights ranging from 110gr. all the way up to 230gr.. As far as recoil, there is no more kick than a 5.56 round really. Recoil to me is more a personal measured thing. I shoot ALOT of skeet with a 12ga., like 250-300 rounds each time out. So recoil does not phase me much at all. Thats why I say it feels like a 5.56 round, just a little thump.
