US Army Model of 1917, recent acquisition

Hey TL, Major 2 from Cas City here, Neet 1917...

I had looked for a holster myself, but all I was seeing was listings with proud asking prices, unless it was pretty rough and even then:confused:.
I decided to order one from Man the Line, and put a little age effect on it.
I bought the little boxes off Amazon and printed the labels on-line
and affixed. I know you'll appreciate that effort.

The Army had two methods of shipping ammunition in half moon clips.

They also had a tool that was used to load the ammunition into the clips.

I believe all the ammunition was clipped up stateside. The moon clips were considered expendable in the field.

I love your boxes, Roger! Beautiful revolver.

Brought it home. Put original lanyard ring on. I have the grip panel from my stuff that has the rack number on it, instead of the CD panel that was on it.`I am sure that was a replacement, but whether it was a war-time replacement (my first guess), or somebody after the war (not very likely) put it on, I do not know. It is a tad bigger than the Victory grip I tried on the gun with it, but slightly too small for an N frame.

I will probably never know the truth, but I like the better fit of the rack number grip. Can't wait to shoot it.

The S&W Model 1917 is a lot of fun to shoot. I have several. I prefer full moon clips but have 4 half moons to go with my Military model built in 1918. Usually, they are used for display but they are ready to go, if need be.

Don't forget, these were designed around a 230 grain FMJ bullet. If you prefer lead, find the largest throat and size to it. The longer the bearing surface on the bullet, the better it will grab the rifling. I load the SAECO 453 bullet over a hardball dose of powder and have never been unsatisfied.

For range use there's nothing better than Rim-Z plastic moon clips. Easy in and out. Make shooting the old guns a great pleasure. I use the same Rim-Z on Colt and S&W 1917s, as well as my shaved MkVI.

Does anyone know where I can find a couple of lanyards for my 1917's.

What style are you considering? Originals can be found on auction sites. So can reproductions. I use about a fathom of paracord, knotted at one end and slipped through the lanyard ring with a cows hitch. Or, you could tie it to a snap hook if you prefer that method of attachment.

I forgot where I got the information but regarding full moon clips. They can be straightened out, using a piece of glass to set them on. You set one on the glass and put your finger down on each clip moving around in a circle, if you do not detect any movement, flip it over and try the other side. If you see any movement on the other side of the clip you can carefully bend the offending side to straighten. I got tired of moon clips and with the recommendation of a friend that competed and lost a match due to a bent clip switched over to Auto Rim...never looked back. Although with my carry 1917 the cylinder is loaded with +P 45ACP rounds in a full moon, stripper clips with Auto Rim are carried either in a pouch or pocket for backup.
