Use/overuse of the word Amazing

This reminds me of a joke. Two girlfriends hadn't seen each other since high school. One was telling the othe how successful in business and life she had been since the last time they saw each other:

"I graduated from Harvard with a law degree."

"That's AMAZING!"

"Now I own my own law firm"

"That's AMAZING!"

"I married brilliant brain surgeon and we and our two wonderful children are very happy."

"That's AMAZING!"

"So, what did you do after high school?"

"I went to finishing school."

"FINISHING SCHOOL? What on earth did you learn there?"

"They taught me to say 'Amazing' instead of 'BULL.....'"😁

It has become a spacer word, like um. It gives the speaker time to think of a cogent reply.

I hate hearing it wrongly used. But knowing its common usage makes it easier to tolerate

You forgot stunning. This thread is dope, BTW. Thanks for reaching out and helping us all gain perspective for our Teams. Insert a trust fall here to complete the synergy.

I don't mind that a word is used many times as long as it's in the proper context. The word that is mis-used frequently and at times stupidly is decimate. Last time I remember it being used properly was in a Donald Hamilton Matt Helm novel 40 years ago.

Regarding Donald Hamilton...well after the Matt Helm stuff he did a little gunwriting for GUN DIGEST. Good articles as one would expect from a pro.

"Like, I know, right?"

Bad enough when used alone, even worse when combined lol. I remember "Like" being used as a teen's filler word in the 80's/90's and it has unfortunately stuck around. Nowadays you can read a news story with a witness quote that uses it 5 or 6 times in a single paragraph.

"I know, right?" seems to have gotten popular maybe 10 years ago I'm thinking. Never cared for it; it just seems weird to my ears for some reason.

I once heard the story of a man born in the early 1800's to a backwoods family. It had been a struggle for the couple to have children, and they were so thrilled with this precious little boy that they named him Amazing. He grew up and married, never venturing from the little hamlet where he was born. He was a simple farmer to whom neither greatness nor honor smiled upon him. On his death bed, he told his wife, "All my life, I've been teased about my name. I've hated it! Promise me that you will not put my name on my tombstone." His wife promised.

When he died, his tombstone read: "Here lies a man who never told a lie in his life; never had a drink of strong liquor; never smoked or used tobacco in any form; was faithful to his wife and never even gazed at another woman. He was a perfect husband and father. And he was loved and revered by everyone who knew him."

Surprisingly, even after these many years, when people visit the little country graveyard and read his epitaph, they know exactly who's buried there. They will often be heard to exclaim, "Hey!! That's Amazing!":ROFLMAO:
That must have one BIG tombstone!!

Drift alert:

As long as I have known Ruthie she has two speech habits that I have finally become inured to.

1: semaphore. If I tied her hands together she couldn't talk.

2: "ya know." She uses it as a place holder to let others know the floor is still hers. I would wager that she drops it every seventh word.

Bless her heart.

Irregardless of what you may think of the amazing term, “45 Long Colt”, it’s over use has made it a colloquialism. ;)
