My local dealer just got a used S&W M&P Shield in as a trade in. It is in 9mm. Im interested in it.

Can someone tell me what to look for on this used gun to ensure it is mechanically good? Are there any things in particular to the Shield line that I should check?

Supposedly, and this is what the dealer is saying, the guy bought it, kept it a month and returned it as a trade in on a Glock because he really wanted a Glock. Also, he told the dealer he only fired one full magazine through it. Hard to tell if that is true. The feed ramp and chamber are black with soot, but the end of the barrel doesnt have much wear at all when I retracted the slide. The outside appearance looked good.

Thanks for any advice! Oh yea, they have it marked at $419.00 but I will offer him a lower price, they usually work with me on prices!

The Shield hasn't been out long enough to have any excessive round counts....if you want it, buy it and have fun.

MSRP is $449. I purchased mine new for $419. I have seen them listed new for $399. Personally, I would purchase if I could get under $400.

We're only talking $20, so it is up to you. Personally I am very happy with my Shield and enjoy shooting it.

I only paid $409 for a new Shield. S&W can refuse to provide warranty service to you as the second owner should the need arise. I believe I would buy a new one.

Yeah... Although I haven't read about any 9mm Shield issues, I bought mine new for $395 (+tax). If you can't get the sale price under $400, he's ripping you off and you may as well buy New.

Since debuting in April, it's as good as new. However, used for the price of a new one. Tough call. Alot of guys would love the opportunity to touch one. How bad do you want it?

After talking to the dealer again he agreed to take $379.00 for it before taxes, so even with taxes it will be under $400.00 and he also said he would give me a 10% discount on any ammo in the store that I want.

The lifetime warranty including free shipping it worth buying new.

I am not suggesting you will need the warranty but one ship back of a firearm would negate any savings buying used.

When I owned a Kahr and Beretta Nano collectively I shipped them back 4 times in less than one year.

UPS quoted me $70 to ship a handgun.

I realize the gun manufacturers don't pay $70 to ship but the average joe paying is going to take a hit in the pocket book if they need to cover shipping a handgun.

I would never buy a used gun if a manufacturer is willing to pick up the cost to ship and repairs especially for life in S&W case.

If Shields are hard to get in your area this would be a good price. I paid $449 for mine. I knew if I waited I could get it cheaper but wanted to support my LGD. Plus at retail this gun is a fair deal. The only thing is I believe Smith gives a lifetime warranty for the original owner but only the one year on second owner. On the other hand I hear Smith customer service is good.

Buy it if thats what you want. I've been on a waiting list for 3 months, If it was me would if it was in like new condition.

A new one will be a used gun after you fire one round through it. Buy it and shoot the hell out of it. These guns have had an amazing record of perfection in the short time they have been out. If anything dramatic ever shows up that could cause catastrophic failures you will NOT have to pay to ship it back to S&W.

There are people with really high counts. Like 5000+. Me almost 1000. But I got mine in april so that number isn't as high as it could be.

I might would consider it if he would give me a break on an extra mag when he could get one. It would be a hard call for me, unless I knew the dealer really well. I paid $424 new, so is the extra savings worth it? I'm assuming there is no range so you could try it out first. In thinking a bit... I'd do it for $350-360 out the door, & I'd say he won't be losing anything at that price. That's pretty close to dealer cost new. BTW did the dealer sell it new? Might make a difference. At any rate Good Luck on your decision.

I got my used Shield for $350 before tax at my LGS. I was on a list for a new one but they called me when the used one showed up. Barely fired if at all since the thing looked mint inside and out. Came with the box, 8rd mag and everything else.

It really comes down to how much you want it. It's not that bad of a price and I would take advantage on the ammo discount as long as they don't overcharge for it....I know the shop where I bought the Shield sure does.

Very true, but....how would they know I am the second owner?

Someone is forgetting that you can also register these guns online with S&W. If it has already been registered and he sends in the card, S&W might prove to be difficult to deal with in the future for him if they think he has already tried to "pull the wool over their eyes". If he needs mercy because of a needed repair he might find they aren't too lenient with him after trying to pull one on them.

Yeah... I registered mine online the day I got it.
Too bad you can't find out if the original owner registered it.

As mentioned, you'll most likely not ever need the warranty, but who knows?
Even if they don't cover 2nd owners with warranty work (sending it in for repair), would they possibly send replacement PARTS at no charge? Other companies do.
(I'm new to S&W ownership, so I'm not sure about their replacement parts policy)
