USPS is terrible.

Every thing I have sent priority mail with USPS has taken forever or gotten lost. I started sending stuff regular post and all has arrived in 2 - 3 days. Tried UPS with fast stuff. Lost 2 packages right off. I'll stick with USPS regular. My LGS ships everything that way.

One FFL I know was on the verge of training his dog to attack anyone in a brown uniform they were such a screw up where he lived.

I like usps flat rate boxes for heavy items . I sent a medium flat rate box with lead bars to myself. It was just under 70lbs (max weight) and only cost $14 to ship. The first time my usps delivery person didn't deliver my package and I had to drive to the post office the next town over to pick it up because my postman had a disabiltiy and couldn't handle the weight. I They didn't tell me anything at first just that deliver was attempted and failed and made up some lame excuse and forced me to go to the post office to sort it out. The second time I sent just under 70lbs of bullets to myself and it was delivered no problem.

Boycott! I'm gonna deliver and retrieve my own letters and parcels myself.

That'll learn 'em.
You may need to speak to the Postmaster General...

USPS handles millions of pieces of mail every day. The vast majority of them arrive on time without any trouble.
The problem is that when they do screw up, they go all out and have absolutely no system in place to correct mistakes.
I've told the story several times of one of my packages that took a 32 day , 4 state, 7 cities trip from one end of my state to the other. Another time I had a package arrive at the Memphis distribution center on time only to take a side trip to Oregon and back.
I would offer my opinions on why these problems can't get resolved, but the last time I did that I got a 3 day time out here.

USPS boss Louis DeJoy at recent Senate hearings when being asked about the feckless performance of the Post Office.

To repeat myself:

"The U.S. Postal Service handles around 500 million pieces of mail every day. UPS and FedEx deliver 34 million packages combined. Those are astounding numbers and their failure rates barely budge the needle.

Gas up your car and try retrieving/delivering your own mail/parcels for the same rates as those three charge and see how that works out.

They do Herculean tasks everyday. If my stuff is late once in a while I cut them slack because they cast huge nets and there are bound to be a few holes here and there."

USPS manager in an email called what happened to my package as "looping"! So obviously it happens often enough that USPS has even given this thing a name to use!
I can live with a late package most of the time, but not sure how anyone defends a system where a package just keeps looping from sending center to receiving center over and over again, and the system doesn't have a way to recognize the same tracking number has traveled through 4 times!
For anyone whose ever been in this type of situation, and not been able to even find a place on USPS site to report such a problem, or a real person to talk to for such a problem, I hope it never happens to you! I think those who feel USPS isn't that bad you have never had a package stolen, damaged, mis-delivered, or just traveled back and forth in limbo around the US.

Maybe the issues I have ran into are local issues for my area (Chicago Suburbs) Here's what I have run into:

1. I'm retired and the wife and I go away for a week or two. Before leaving I fill out a hold mail card at the post office. I've ran into, the mail was delivered, partially delivered and never stopped, over loaded my mail box so the top was opened, it rained and ruined all the mail...
FWIW, when we needed to have our mail held for a couple of weeks we went online to file the "hold mail" request.

Worked like a charm. Maybe give that a try if you ever need them to hold it for you in the future.

If you submit the card you have to rely on one of their employees to enter the info into their system - not to mention counting on them to enter it all accurately. If you do it online you can make sure it is not only entered, but entered correctly.

You know the old adage about "if you want something done RIGHT..." ;)

Anyone remember the days when mail ordering something came with a "three to six week delivery time"?
I am sure that delivery foul ups have been going on since the beginning of time. The thing is that we haven't been able to track our packages to see it happen until the advent of the internet.
Modern times have ruined us all. To quote Veruca Sall from Willy Wonka...

I want the works
I want the whole works
Presents and prizes and sweets and surprises
Of all shapes and sizes
And now
Don't care how
I want it now
Don't care how
I want it now

Had a friend on the lake that was here for 7 months and did 5 more at his Florida trailer. Always filled out the change paper work about a week before they went south.

I would check their box for a couple more weeks and if necessary take the found mail to the PO for the trip to Florida.

Every year it was the same BS, so in desperation he would take down the mailbox and put a chain across the driveway.
That seemed to work.

PS when he left Florida he never had any problem with the mail now going back to NY.

I didn't plan on posting here because I simply hate these threads. As I have said in the past the USPS is my favorite outfit and they have never let me down. They always exceed my expectations.

Today was a disaster. Not with the USPS, but rather with the *** ***** UPS.

My son sent us a Christmas gift and paid for second day air. It got to our town as scheduled, but then the local office held it for THREE ****** days before they delivered it.

So sorry, so sad. Who cares? WELL, it was an Omaha Steak package. The dry ice was used up and all the meat was thawed. WE care.

Yep. I ordered a down jacket from a company in Utah and it shipped the next day. USPS tracking showed it made to Atlanta, Ga pretty quick, then it went to Jacksonville, Fl and then back to Atlanta and now it's back in Jacksonville again. Tracking shows it's been in Jacksonville for 3 days now & who knows when it will ever get out of there and make to me in E. Tennessee.

I know we have several retired postal workers on this forum that bristle up when they read these threads, but the sad truth is the USPS is not what it was in the past. A system that was once efficient and dependable has progressively gotten worse & worse over the last several years. It's like a role of the dice when you ship something now. Rant over. Don

Continuation of my own above post: The saga continues.......after my jacket spent a few days in Jacksonville, Fl it finally made it to Knoxville, Tn and just 25 miles from me. But wait, from Knoxville it was sent to the wrong town about 20 miles from me. After spending 2 days there it has now been sent to Greenville, SC..about 200 miles away. I'm now just curious how many more "screw-ups" the USPS will make before the jacket gets to me OR will they just completely lose it.

I've no problem with anyone that wants to champion the USPS...everyone has the right to their own opinion, and so do I. My opinion is the once dependable service of the USPS is long gone and has been for several years. It's become a joke compared to what it used to be. Don

So I guess we can now end this thread!

I still hate USPS, but got a surprise this morning!
I got home from our Monday car club breakfast and did another search of tracking number, which revealed the powder measure was still sitting in Waynesville, Ohio PO Box. I called the seller and asked if he had checked his PO Box, and he said he didn't have one! He told me he'd go to USPS tomorrow and see what's up.
I hung up and two minutes later there's a knock on my door, and it's my postman with a box in his hands and he says, "I bet you've been waiting for this awhile now?"
It's my Wilkinson powder measure that tracking says is in Ohio!! I asked him what happened, and he told me his boss told him "We need to find this tracking number before you leave today, as this package has been back and forth for weeks, and needs to get to your customer!"
I asked why it was so messed up, and he said it's the small tracking labels that rural post offices use. They're 2/3rds the size of normal tracking labels and the big distribution center equipment can't read them properly. Of course I asked why they haven't eliminated those labels if they don't work well, and he couldn't tell me why. But at least it's finally here, and the package was in perfect condition too!

Well, MY opinion is that they are better than they ever were. That's not just an opinion, but it is based on my experience.

So, YOUR experience is 180 degrees away. How's come?

Must be a regional thing....

And this is the real problem. USPS doesn't mess up very often. In fact, they have a truly outstanding record. The real issue is that when they do screw up, they have absolutely no way of fixing it. Their attitude is like "Oh well, we can still track it, so I guess it'll get there eventually."
Example: my infamous 32 day package, it was only supposed to go about 400 miles from one end of my state to the other. Instead it "Looped" through 7 cities in 4 states multiple times. Every time I tried to get help, the answer was always the same: "We have the tracking. We know exactly where it is."
Ok, but what are you gonna do about it?
Answer: "Nothing, we're tracking it."
BTW: My package finally just appeared mysteriously in my mail box. I checked that tracking number for a long time after. For about 3 months, it showed as being "Enroute to next destination."
In a nutshell:
USPS normally does a good job.
When they do screw up, they won't admit it.
They have no way of fixing a mistake, so they just don't try.
