The current MOAA magazine has an article and pictures of the sunken aircraft carrier USS Yorktown 3 miles deep.
Wow! looking at those pictures gave me the shivers.
Those sailors and Marines were men of steel.

When the tv program on the discovery of the USS Yorktown aired, I was working in a hospital. One of my patients was watching the program. He looked at me and said I wonder if they want my keys. I asked him what for? He replied he was on the Yorktown when she was sunk, and that he still had his keys to his locker on the ship. We decided no sense offering them to Ballard as probably everything in the locker was ruined by then.

My wife’s great uncle was killed May 30, 1942 after landing his F4-F Hellcat on the USS Yorktown (CV-5), one of his squadron mates missed the hook and landed on top of his plane. He was XO of VF-3, Jimmy Thatch and Butch O’Hare were members of the squadron. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross while defending the USS Lexington Feb 20, 1942. He shot down one bomber. He was a USNA graduate. A destroyer,the USS Lovelace, was named for him posthumously.
