Last summer I took a class to allow me to apply for a Utah license. My class was told that by going through this and submitting our paperwork, we'd get a CCW from Utah that would be honored by several states(not Illinoiz). I haven't submitted my application yet because I felt that much more personal instruction was needed by me to be safe and effective if and when the need would arise.

This all being said, I read yesterday that Utah won't issue unless your home state issues.

I did some searches but didn't find what I need. (Probably right there in front me:rolleyes:). Just curious if I and my classmates were relieved of money not well spent.

So? I'm interested in your knowledgeable input but just facts not opinions please.:)

I do not believe they will recognize you as Illinois has no permits to have reciprocity with.

handgunlaws.us

Gary Slyder does a good job of keepingthe site up to date with the state laws.

You might want to check out Florida. I believe there actually have a couple of states authorized that Utah doesn't.

The "handgunlaws.com" is a good place to look.

His problem is he's from ILLINOIS.

ILLINOIS denies the RIGHT to CARRY to it's residents.

You Can NOT GET another STATES NON RESIDENT permit, when you have NO STATE PERMIT or the right to one.

Illinois has you screwed with regard to GENERAL CARRY PERMITS.

I got my Utah permit about 18 months ago and back then Wisconsin didn't have permits....

Is this a new Utah law?

Utah changed the law

Utah no longer offers concealed carry permit if you don't have a permit from your home state. Early on you could receive one but that is no longer the case. I have a relative that encountered this change.

I found it in UTAH law on handgunlaw.us

53-5-704

Pg 3 and 4 Utah Law on handgunlaw.us

SECTION 4

At the end of 4, a RED NOTE!

States that DO NOT HAVE PERMITS CAN APPLY

The cost is $51

If your state HAS licenses, or reciprocity you also need to

supply a copy of it with your application.

Sorry about the miss info.

LOOKS LIKE YOU NEED TO CALL THEM 801-965-4445

I live in Illinois, I know you all feel sorry for me, I took a Utah CCW class (in Illinois) back in October. Utah charged my cc in November, I am still waiting. At the time the class was given the instructor said nothing about any changes in the Utah law.
Everyone in attendance was under full understanding that the Utah CCW would not allow anyone to carry in Illinois. What it does do is allow everyone with a non-resident Utah CCW to carry in other states that have a reciprocity agreement with Utah, around 30 states IIRC.

Yep, when I took the course back in July, there was no misunderstanding about carry in Illinoize. However, when I took this, the UT law had already changed. $100 up in smoke. I'm looking into some legal ramifications, such as being scammed.

The saga continues......

Utah Code

This is a link to the Utah Legislature web site and 53-5-704 UCA. If you want to know the answer then read the statute instead of depending on other sites which have no legal authority. This is current information.

I won't read it for you, I am a Utah resident and don't care.

I recieved a non resident Utah permit before Wisconsin issued permits like Lost Lake did. If you live in a state that issues permits you must have a permit from the state you reside in and send a copy of your permit with your utah application. If your state dosen't issue permits (and Il. is the last one of these) you can still get a non resident Utah permit, of course this dose not mean you can carry in IL. If and when Il. gets ccw and they don't make you jump thru 100 hoops to get one they may do what Wisconsin did and issue you a permit because you have one from another state. This maybe wishful thinking.

READ POST #10.

I did and read the STATUTE.

It looks like THE LAW HAS CHANGED,

NO NON-RESIDENT to states without CARRY RIGHTS, ANY LONGER.

You can call UTAH at 801-965-4445 and see for yourself.

I'm from IL (Unfortunately). Many of my friends have taken the Utah CCW class, "which contains no firearm handling or proficiency". I carry a FL CCW permit which is recognized in about 30+ states, and have for about 8 years. I would like to ask if all those permits that have been issued to IL residents will be recognized by the states that were advertised would honor it?

I would assume with this mentioned change none of those permits would be able to be renewed when they expire?

Since IL has a IL Supreme Court decision that the state MUST pass a CCW law for residents of IL within 6 months, would the Utah permits be valid then "If the IL resident obtained an IL permit"?

H Richard,

You'll most probably die of old age before Illinois has CONCEALED CARRY for the masses.

Chicago Political methods and wants rule, haven't you seen what's occurring in WASHINGTON D.C.

The Chicago Politicos will delay, ignore court edicts, and do as they please.

If you used the Army and tried to jail them all, then they would act and pass concealed carry,

but with so many hoops to jump through, you would still die of old age before qualifying for the license.

CORRECT,

WITHOUT A VALID STATE LICENSE, UTAH WILL NO LONGER RENEW.

I read the statute and I don't see anywhere that says IL residents can't get a Utah permit.

The statute says IF your state issues permits, AND your state has a reciprocity agreement or recognizes Utah's permit, you must have one from your state.

This would not apply to Illinois.

If I'm wrong please quote the text in the statute so we all can see it. ;)

Lost Lake,

HELLO!!!!!!

Just call the number in UTAH and INQUIRE with the LEGAL AUTHORITIES.

Even though I didn't need to, I called.

UTAH WILL ISSUE PERMITS TO ILLINOIS RESIDENTS.

Maybe if I yell it you will hear me. :D

So there. I called, the nice gentleman told me whoever said they don't issue to Illinois residents is wrong. I even explained that we were discussing it on this forum and some people thought that because IL doesn't issue a permit, they can't get a Utah permit, and he said "They're wrong."

If you call, press option 3 for the Concealed Permit help desk.

Well, I do feel much better, seriously, that I and 30 other people weren't scammed. I still need much training before I'd feel comfortable about carrying, but this is a result of that very class that I took. I had asked the instructor about not having to demonstrate basic firearm handling and safety abilities and he replied that it would be much better if it did but.....

Thanks all who responded.

Most of your SHOUTING is WRONG!

Utah issued me (an Illinois resident) a permit. Florida does so as well. 30-some states recognize these permits, whether or not the holder is a resident of the issuing state while others, like Michigan, do not. Of course, Illinois does not recognize anyone's CCW, but the Utah permit is quite useful for travel. As we work to overcome 75 years of government stupidity and public apathy, it is comforting to know there are knowledgeable souls like yourself out there to encourage us.

Cap lock is no substitute for facts.
