Can someone tell me the Virginia open carry laws? I know it's legal there but someone told me that pistols have to be registered in the state of Virginia in order to carry them and be 100% legal. So do pistols have to be registered to carry them in Virginia?

You sir are awesome. Just making double sure

No registration required.

We had an Open Carry Day in New Castle Nov 2013. About 150-200 people attended, about 1/2 Open Carrying. Local NEWS Channel 10 coverage.

Philip Van Cleave President of the Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) was a one of the speakers. It took place right in the street in front of the Circuit Court house. Never an issue.

Laws are updated end of June each year. On the VCDL site there is a card you can print that tries to keep up with the carry laws and restricted locations. You may want to print and carry it with you. If you hit a gun show where they are attending you can get a small yellow carry wallet card.

I believe 'open carry' has been legal in Virginia for over 400 years-- JMHO I will leave it at that so as not to get any more infractions--:)

Congrats on your service and welcome to the Forum. My brother was a CPO on the Eisenhower. He retired sometime in the middle to late 90's.

There is no distinction between open and concealed carry in regards to where you can and can't. If you can conceal there, you can open carry there, unless prohibited by the property owner.

One exception is national parks/forests. CC is legal, OC is not. VA state parks allow both CC and OC because, you guessed it, VA is an open carry state.

I have heard that carry/registration myth too. No firearms are registered in VA. When I bought my first handgun, I asked the guy I bought it from (a Chesterfield Sheriff) how to register it for carry. He said he had not heard of that. We spoke to another cop about it (Henrico PD) and he confirmed there is no way to go about registering a firearm in VA. Even when you buy one from an FFL, the gun is not registered to you. There is a record that X gun store sold Y gun with Z serial to N person
