We are planning another trip to Seattle in September. This time with a twist. We got a good price on one way tickets to Missoula Mt. I've been to Yellowstone but I want to see Glacier this time. Looking for advice on what to see in that area and across Idaho to Spokane. Any good reservations to see? The route to Glacier takes us along Flathead lake. Doesn't look like much west of Spokane, but I know nothing of the area. We will be arriving on September 6th and would like to be on Vashon Island by the 11th. Up for most any suggestions. We'd like to hit as many Harley stores as possible for the tee shirt collection.

Take some time in Coeur d'Alene; it's beautiful. If you're into wine, both Walla Walla and Yakima are world-class wine country. Mt. Rainier is amazing, as are the Olympics, especially if you're heading towards Vashon. Avoid "downtown" Seattle, as it's still (according to my family) a ****hole. Safe travels.

Whitefish is a really cute little town that's fun to walk around and shop and Lake Coeur d'Alene as stated is a great place to spend the day. Glacier is kind of hard to see well by driving so get prepared to do a lot of hiking and the white water rafting is also a great way to see it. If you can try to catch a ride in one of the vintage Ford topless buses.

Thanks for all the advice. We get to Missoula around 12:00 noon. That should give us time to drive to Great Falls for the night. Then up to Glacier on Saturday. Is Glacier as crowded as Yellowstone? There won't be much hiking,as I can't breathe and my girlfriend has a bad knee. It will be interesting to see how altitude affects my breathing. 16 years ago I was proud I was able to smoke a cigar on top of Pikes Peak. Little did I know then.

Drive through the National Bison Range N of Missoula. Spend about 2 hours on the long loop. The southern 2/3rd of Flathead Lake has a lot more character than the part you will see from the road on the North end.

Glacier is busy this time of year. If your going to G Falls and taking the Sun Highway, you will be on the inside lane. That is a good plan for first timers.

Plan on daytime temperatures from 90 F to 40 F in that time range. When I lived on that side we occasionally had frost by Labor Day but usually more by the 2nd or 3rd week of September. Expect mostly dry weather. We are burning up currently I visibility in SW MT is around 4-5 miles. It will take snow to put out the fires we have now. What you see will be different and pretty, but may be effected by smoke.

If you don't have reservations get them now. It can be impossible to stay in some places on a spur of the moment. If I were going I would consider the drive North from Missoula on 93, stay in the Flathead and see Glacier by going E from Columbia Falls, stopping at Goat Haunt, then entering the Park at the East Entrance. Go North to Many Glacier and Two Medicine then go over the Sun Road. If you want to avoid crowds in scenery and have the best chance of seeing any wildlife, be on the road at 6 AM. Sunset will be around 8:15 then. Glacier has some short hikes of less than 1/2 mile. Have a great trip.

Explain to me the vehicle registration to get into Glacier. We were thinking we'd stay somewhere in the Colombia Falls area for two nights. Now it looks like we might be better off staying near St Mary and the second day heading west.

If you enter Going to the Sun Road from the east, you don't need a vehicle reservation.

Book a boat tour, St. Mary is my favorite.
