Value Model 58

I have been looking at this Model 58 at my LGS for probably 6 months or more. This gun has been fired very little and is in Excellent to like new shape. Serial # puts it at around 1966. It is on Consignment for $1500. There is no box or paperwork. Can I get opinions to the value of this gun. Thanks

Even in the current seller's market, I think the model 58 in the first two and the last photos (nice condition but non-original stocks) is probably $300-400 high.

$1500 is also high for the 6" model 27 in photo 3.

Thanks for pointing out the wrong picture. The same guy is also selling a 27-2 6" also in Excellent shape. That might be for another post. What would be the correct grips for this gun? Magnas?

Look at the ratchet that rotates the cylinder in the middle pic looks worn?
The going rate on the older s&w N frames seems to be climbing. I’d offer $1,000. Depends on condition and what you want it for.

The correct stocks would be the relatively scarce modified/"plainclothes" Magnas, with rounded bottoms. Figure $100-150 for a suitably nice set.

Did Model 58s come with the three Ts? It looks like that one certainly has 'em. I carried, as well as other officers, a Model 58 for several years. I never saw or heard of one with a target trigger or hammer.

I agree with those above who feel that it's a bit over priced, especially if the trigger and hammer are not original to the revolver.

I do not like that side plate fit and also the gun has a target hammer and trigger. I don’t think the 58, which was a service revolver, would have came with those upgrades and the side plate fit is a red flag.

Nice shape maybe but not original and not worth $1500

Looks pretty good and as noted, wrong grips although valuable and the 58 did not come with TH & TT but also has value. No box, so it won’t be considered by a high end collector but 800 - 1000 would be my buy price.

Agreed on all counts. $1500 is too much for this gun. Magnas and the .265 service hammer and trigger were the factory setup, so this one has been modified somewhat. The comment about the ratchets on the extractor being worn, I don't think so, but you can see where the hand has rubbed it from many rotations of the cylinder, so it's probably been fired a bit. The side plate looks okay, depending on how the light hits it, the fitment can look good or bad. See pic 2 below. The plate has never been off this gun.

This is what an unfired M58's ratchets look like (1st pic), and what the original configuration would be (2nd pic). I bought this ANIB for $1200, with box and paperwork, unfired. It's an S prefix, 1967 mfg. it was a safe queen for over 50 years, two different owners. No more, I love shooting it.

ok I am looking at only pictures but I do not like the side plate upper lip, I dont like the roll marks by the yoke screw or the 41 mag roll mark. Could be a reblue, a close look would be needed. Agreed on the ratchet, looks too worn. A no go at that price....

Not a $1500 gun unless it can be lettered to have had left the factory with target stocks, target trigger, and target hammer OR has the box with the right boxes indicating the extras. Mostly these (TS, TT, TH) are add-ons intended to increase sales in 60s/70s. I have one that's just identical, and it left the factory in 1967 as a plain jane; it was dressed up sometime later. I have the box; it does NOT indicate the extras, and I did have it lettered. I have about $600 in mine, but have had it 6 years.

It's still my favorite as a shooter.

The original M58 (no dash) was made from 1964-1977, with about 20,287 total production, according to the Standard Catalog. A reintroduction occurred in 2009 with the M58-1 as part of the Classic series, discontinued again in 2012. The original issue, so far as I can find, is one of the only S&W's that had no series changes throughout it's entire run.

So, there aren't really a whole lot of them, but the value established by the Catalog for an ANIB example makes the one relative to this thread overpriced. It does look nice, but IMO it's been reblued and of course has the noted mods of TH and TT, and Target stocks. If it locks up and passes all the other function tests (push-off, end play, etc.), I'd say it qualifies as Good condition, so maybe $750 accounting for inflation and the crazy pricing of late.

On the other hand, if it's truly worth what's being asked for it, it makes my ANIB M58 a real steal for me.

I'm late to this discussion but agree with the assessments and thoughts that the price ought to be under $1k especially if it is refinished. The correct stocks (diamond PC magnas) are extremely difficult to find and I doubt that they could be purchased for less than $300 from someone who knows what they are. Finding a set for sale would likely be much harder than finding the $$$ with which to buy them.

While it is certainly possible that someone could have ordered the Target hammer and trigger on one from the factory, it is certainly doubtful. The target stocks are much later than would be on the pistol if ordered new. I suspect someone probably put them on to enhance the value. Service stocks are around and can be had. The original serrated trigger with color case can be had nearly anywhere reasonably cheap since K and N triggers are the same. The hardest part is the original .265 service hammer. In modern times only the 58 had that part in all the N frames. It is a rare part and I have only seen one for sale in the last 15 years and I bought it as a spare for my 58, in case it ever needs one. So putting this back to original will be nearly impossible. The side plate doesn't worry me and the blue on my early S series is nearly as good except has wear from use. This is a $700 to $800 revolver tops and then only for a person who wants to shoot it as is.

Been toying with the idea of putting my shooter grade 2.5 inch Lew Horton 686 up for trade for a model 58 shooter grade. If they are going for that much I don't think its gonna happen.

You never know. I just tripped over mine and never expected to see one in rural NM.
