My brother is visiting me in Fl from Ga. He brought his MP40c which he's owned for 4 years. A few hundred rounds down the pipe. He also has his 40 Shield which has been trouble free. He might be looking to sell the larger gun. What would be a fair brother to brother price. Is $350 a fair price for both of us? We are going shooting tomorrow to compare them both. The 40c does fit my hand better than the shield, but I can't wait to shoot them together. I only shot a MP9c once. Been a Glock owner for years. Now HK. GARY

I just bought my MP40c last week for $499. NIB; To me a four year old gun discounted only $150. does not sound fair. To make a fair deal, I would visit a gun dealer and ask what they would pay for it as a trade in. That would be fair.

Dealer trade in is a rip off.
I think $350 is a fair deal, not deal of the century ,but fair.

Check gunbroker.com. They go for $375-$425 $350 is the low bid IMHO.

I agree with the previous poster. I don't think you will easily find one for 350 in decent shape anywhere else...

Shot both guns today. While both guns were nice, I enjoyed shooting the 40c better. It kicked less than the Shield. No safety lever, but the mag must be inserted for the gun to fire. I can live with that. I offered him $300. He said he'd think about it, as he'll be in town for a week. But he said he doesn't need 2 carry guns. I'll probably go to $325 if he wants, but the gun is real clean. 3 mags come with it. GARY

For what handguns are going for,it could be worth well more. But a brother brother trade is different. At most,I'd give him what he paid for it. That is if it's been well taken care of.

My 40c is invaluable, and would have to be pried from my cold dead hands. If its in good shape I would go as high as $400.00

40c kicked less than a 40 Shield. Smaller frame of the Shield may play a "little" on the matter, but the dual recoil spring in the Shield makes up for the smaller frame, IMO.

I think 350 is a very good deal for a great pistol. You get an extra magazine to boot. I would go for it. He is your brother after all and over the years things like this have a way of evening themselves out.;)

I would pay $350 right now. I love the compacts.
Never go by dealer trade in. I saw a local dealer offer a young guy $100 for a Glock 22.
I told him to sell it on Gunbroker, but he wanted the money immediately.

He waited a few weeks to sell it after his new purchase, so they did not give him the 50% that he was told.
I would never trade in anything.

Also, I think it is good to have a 40 since it is the easiest ammo to find.

A gun store would give him like $200 for it on a trade. You can always sell guns privately for more. I would say more like $250-$275 would be fair. $300 if want to help a brother out.. LoL

It's VERY rare to get a good deal on a trade-in at "most" LGS. They need their $$$ when re-selling it. I've seen used guns get marked up (at least) $2-$300 more than what the seller traded them in for when they got put back on the rack. You are MUCH better selling outright to a private buyer.

If my brother wanted my 40c and i wanted to get rid of it, i would give it to him for free. But if I had to give a brother price, i would say half of the used price.

Yeah but the OP is the one that wants the gun, not the other way around. Kinda hard to tell your brother to give it away if he doesn't want to.

$400 is cheapest you'll see them on the second hand market, even more with 3 mags. I wouldn't grind MY brother on price.

I got the gun today. He didn't want to let it go for $300, so I offered him $350 & he said that was fine. Turns out it came with 4 mags & a nice DeSantis leather holster, but I have to sell it as he's a lefty, & I'm a righty. The gun is very clean, but dry as a bone. I cleaned & lubed the gun, & it's ready to be on my side tomorrow. It's not like I was dying to have this gun, but I knew it was well taken care of, & I shot it on Monday, so I know it's in nice shape. GARY

IMHO a gun only depreciates so much. As long as it is in good shape and not 10,000 round count then it will retain it's value. Cars continue to go down until they are worth next to nothing...not so in guns. I think $350 is a fair used price for the same gun $500 new. As long as you take care of it you should be able to sell it for what you paid...given the gun market who knows when prices will stop going up.

I bought one last spring from a LGS for $400. Unless you do a face to face sale, anything bought from one of the auction sights will cost you shipping, insurance, your FFL's fee, and depending on the state you live in, sales tax.

That $350 on Gunbroker turns into $425 pretty fast. Still, the OP got a bargain with the mags and holster.

$350 with 4 mags and a good holster is a good deal. These guns are not depreciating yet, the demand is too high.

First Responders are buying these NIB with three mags for $399 every day. Add a $20 FFL fee and the cheapest I can buy one is $420. Add the extra mag and holster in and the cost would be around $475. I'd subtract about $100 for being used but in excellent shape, so I'd say you got a good deal.

Probably the most versatile M&P made, you can use full size grips and shoot .357 or 9mm too. ;)
