Value of S&W ammo

I'm not an expert on such matters, but do buy a lot of old ammo to shoot and test. I'd be willing to pay about $30-35 a box for it, if full, just to run some thru the chrono and compare with the older and newer S&W ammo ad brochures.

I don't think it's worth much because it's really not S&W ammo. It was made by other companies and packaged in a S&W box. BUT, I guess if you can find osmeone who collects S&W ammo it's worth what they are willing to pay.

Like you said it's packaged in a S&W box but the head stamp also has S&W on it.I know S&W does not make it but I wanted them for collecting.I just wanted to know if the $30 that I paid for each box was to much. Thanks for the input.I also have some 270 rifle rounds head stamped S&W and several boxes of S&W shotgun shells.

Just saw a box of Federal NYCLAD ammo today. So, I'm guessing that's who made the stuff for Smith.

I have a few boxes of 38 spl. and 12 gauge "pumpkin balls" and I would tend to agree that it's not worth a lot. I can tell you one fact........... the .38 nickel plated cases are flaking and do not seem to age well. I have at least 200 boxes of other factory (non s&w ammo) and I have had NO flaking of the Nickel. They are all stored in the same location and it is air conditioned in the summer and heated in the winter.
I don't know if I just have a bad batch or it is common with this brand of ammo. I believe the S&W ammo line was made by Fiocci.

Arch Angel, sorry but your way wrong on this. S&W DID make ammo. They owned two plants, one in Rock Creek Ohio and later in Alton Il. They originally bought of Fiochi. Early ammo will have both names on the headstamp like this S W - F. They developed and sold the Nyclad line. Their .22 ammo was made in Mexico.
I have over 500 boxes and loading components. I knew people that worked at both plants. They also made police chemical equipment, remember Mace? Made by S&W. They made marine equipment such as line throwing and flares. I used a Pepper Fogger while on duty at Seabrook NH guarding construction of the power plant.

Hey, I am by far not infallible. I really thought S&W didn't make their own ammo. Thanks for the information.

Just as an added bit of trivia, S&W's handgun brass was supplied by Olin and Amron in addition to Fiocchi. As Gun Club Fan stated, the .22 ammo was Made in Mexico. (Two different loadings in .22LR and .22 Short, a standard and a high velocity, and two different blanks, an Indoor and an Outdoor version).

They also sold shotgun loads in 12 & 20 GA that I know of, and two different loadings in rifle calibers .243Win, .270Win, 30-30, .308 & .30-06.
