Hi folks,

I have wanted a clean 4506 for a while. This gun does not fit my definition of "clean", but it did catch my interest because it is a no dash & is built on the 645 frame. It does appear used to say the least. I haven't had my hands on it yet, I've only been sent these pictures by the owner.

No box or papers, only the Hogue grips on the gun, 2 factory mags.

There is no gun in my collection that looks this "used"; but I think that with a complete strip - meaning emptying the frame & slide; a good soaking, maybe an ultra-sonic clean, & some judicious sanding / medium grit polishing it might clean up to be a reasonably nice looking shooter.

My question - what would a decent price be for a 4506 no dash in this condition & without putting your hands on it? I'd really appreciate some feedback - thanks!

FYI, a friend just sold this one for $500

If I could get that 4506 no dash for $500 I'd be satisfied. Any less than $500 and I'd feel like I got a very good deal.

Even beat up LE trades bring between $400 and $500 on the auction boards. That is when you see them. 3rd gen LE trade ins are no longer as plentiful as they once were.

For $500 you will be getting an ultra reliable, soft shooting, accurate and durable 45. With minimal preventive maintenance (change the recoil spring every 5000 rounds and use lube on the rails) your grandchildren will be enjoying that 4506.

They clean up very nicely and with little effort too. Good luck! Hope this helps! Regards 18DAI

Kevin, I bought my 4506 no dash less than a year ago for $450. It is in superb condition both cosmetically and mechanically. It did not come with anything except one magazine. I never fired it and STUPIDLY I offered it for sale for $600. I got ZERO serious responses other than for trades. So THANKFULLY, I decided to keep it and start using it. Wow, what a great gun! Now it goes to the range with me every time I go. I love this gun for its accuracy, reliability, aesthetics, ergonomics and its steel. And now I wouldn't dream of selling it. I hope my story will help you in your decision making process.

Kevin....I don't see anything on that 4506 that a new set of grips,Ballistol and a gray Scotch bright pad cant fix....;)

I appreciate your input loeman, and that is a nice looking handgun - I am envious. The asking price for the gun I'm looking at is more than what you paid; while I think you got a really good deal & it might not be fair for me to expect that type of value, I think this guy is high in his asking price for the gun I posted pictures of.

Thanks nocents - I think you're correct concerning the flats although I see a nick on the left side of the grip where it meets the front strap. I'd be more concerned about the marks on the top of the slide, above the extractor. I think that is a bead-blasted surface; if so & if it didn't clean up that is something I don't have equipment for.

I don't mean to sound too picky - I wouldn't try to make a new gun out of an old one - but I will admit at times I fall victim to pride in ownership, and a 4506 would be in that category.

I don't think being too picky and pride in ownership is a bad thing.....someones shooter grade is somebody else beater....value on these are so subjective and personal......I found a -1 pawn shop example about a month ago for $525 cash OTD...box...2 mags...looked to be really low round count....but I think I caught that guy when he was really "motivated";)....good luck

It really feels like the market is rapidly changing for many of the 3rd gens. Not long ago (a year or so) I would routinely see 3rd gens in the cases at LGSs and Pawn Shops. I made three stops today and saw none. Another indicator of this market shift is the price for a box. I saw a 4506 no dash box go on the 'Bay just the other day for $61.00. I had hoped to pick it up for mine for $20.00. Anyone have 4506 no dash box for $20.00? Just askin'.

I have a 4506 no dash. The sale price on it would be one you wouldn't pay, and that I wouldn't accept.

I understand! Of course, the worst person to buy from is he/she who has an emotional attachment to the object for sale. Usually, he/she will have a tough time selling too!

I have the same model - mine came to me with some over zealous Flitz applications being performed. A bead blast and it looks like new. Value 450-500 in that condition I'd say.

Since I caught the bug for these 3rd gen stainless semis, I have picked up 3 of the no dash models. All were in like new condition, even the factory grips ( do dinks, dents, etc). Paid $465, $475, and $500. All private sales. I would not let them go for anything under $600. If I were to buy that one, maybe $400 - $450 range. It does need some work.

I have 4 4506's They are some of the finest 3rd generation S&W ever produced in my opinion. Personally I think the no dash, stepped frame series are not quite as desirable as the later series with the non stepped frames, it is just a minor refinement on the later models. All the 4506's will continue to go up in value along with all the variants, 4526, 4536,4546,4556,4566, 4576, 4586, 4596,4563,4567,4513,4516 ...

Thanks for all of the replies. The owner says he has a guy coming this Saturday to take a look at it that is supposedly very interested. If I don't hear from him again, I'm all well with that & will move on. I'm in conversation with someone else that is local to me (that I haven't met) about a Model 645 that appears to be in nice shape - but that is another thread.....!
