Did S&W make a wooden/blue lined display box for 4" guns??

Smith did not waste anything. The box marked 1955 was used for many many years, so as welldoya said, it is a copyright date and does not date the box or the gun.

$475 around here for that gun would have had me reaching for the plastic.

Aw now, you don't need another 28. You've got a pretty nice one already!

If that's the box for that gun, it didn't come from the factory with those grips on it as the box is marked "S" for standard grips, which explains why the gun doesn't fit box properly. Nice rig though, and the price is definitely right, no matter where you live!

The big stocks that are on the gun are my favorites to see but I simply cannot handle the gun comfortably with them on. I will check with the seller to see if the executor (son of deceased) has any unattached S&W grips.

Even if there is no legitimate 'presentation boxed' 28, I will make it one by putting it in a correct/proper box & 'presenting' it to Donna!!!! After all, we did have an anniversary on 8/19!!!! She will like it better than the range hood I installed. Bought a '42/byf Luger in a gun-shop in Cody, Wy. the day we got married.........and she liked that too!!!

Is there such a thing as a commemorative or presentation Mod.28?

Washington State Patrol commemorative in 1981, bright blue finish and a presentation box.

A 28-2 should have an N-prefix ser.no.

Something made in 1955 would have an S-prefix.

Serial number is on the bottom of the grip frame.

N serial numbers started in 1969. All 28s prior to that date would have an S serial number.

Nice find and a very good price, interesting what folks can find at the local "flea markets", trouble is around here, mainly the Hartville market many "stolen" guns filter through there, half of a collection stolen in Willoughby Hills,Ohio went through there, lucky our friends "work" the market and found (recovered) some of them for the client...........the old Kenton Coon Dog trials was another "bad" spot.......that being said, "caveat emptor baby"...................

$475 for boxed 28-2...jump on it now. Great gun and you'll never find one like it in the $300's anywhere. Keep it or shoot it, great piece!!
