Ran across a s&w but don't know what it is and what value it has. Please help me. Any info would be very helpful. My friend is asking 1300 is that a good price?

Serial number 668 and has a star after the 8. No writing but the standard smith and wesson patent dates on the barrel. Don't know the caliber and no s&w logo. If I was going to guess about a 6inch barrel or bigger

It looks like a New Model Number 3 Target. It could be in .44 Russian, .32-44 or .38-44 caliber. The last two were special target cartridges chambered only in this model.

The cartridge holes seem to small for a 44 diameter round. But donno.
What does the other side look like? Does everything function? How is the bore?

Tight lockup ejector and everything works. Bore looks alittle dark. And there is more wear on the other side unfortunately no pics of the other side. I would feel comfortable shooting it.
Oh man! I don't know. That's a beautiful hunk of steel. It would be worth a lot to me, if I wasn't broke.
This could be significant enough that you need someone capable of accurately evaluating it. From the little information and pictures we have I would est. it is easily worth in excess of the asking price. Further hands on evaluation is needed to confirm.
A lot will depend on just how much wear. If it is somewhat comparable to the side shown, I would agree that $1300 is possibly too low. However I have seen some guns that were so roached out on one side, the only way I could stand looking at them was laying on a a table or hanging on the wall........
I think it is a 38 single action third model (caliber 38S&W). If so, the 6" barrel is a plus; the target sights a big plus. If that's what you have, I offered one for sale at Columbus without the star (which suggests factory refinish) for $1500 and it did not sell.

That sure looks like a 6 shot cylinder to me. The M1891 was only 5.
Also, the M1891 doesn't have the upper sideplate screw.. (If I remember right..))

So is the 1300 a good bet?
If this is a New Model No 3 Target Model, which it looks like it is, then probably. I don't know how the factory refinish hurts the value, but I would guess maybe 20 or 25%. Let's put it this way -- as for myself, it was refinished other than at the factory, I wouldn't even give it a second glance. With the star, I would remain interested, but want to pay less than what I would if it were all original.
The star doesn't necessarily mean a factory refinish. It could be most anything that required a trip to the factory. First thing would be to determine the chambering. If it is a 38/44 or a 32/44 the cylinder should be bored straight through as the brass for the calibers was extra long and completely enclosed the bullet. 38 S&W would have slight throat, etc. The next step would to get a factory letter and see just how it left the factory. (The return could have been for the target sights or any other repairs.)
