I sure hate to show my lack of knowledge, but just what is the purpose of the belly button just below the cylinder release latch on a Victory model?

That's where the hammer pin is mounted on the inside. They changed the design and the indent vanished in 1945.

Thanks, Now that I look at the pre 10s I have I see the stud in a much more unobtrusive form. I suppose they swaged it on the wartime stuff to make it more robust.

No - its been that way forever. Here is a 1911-ish gun :

I should know better than to argue with a guy who has an engraved 1917, but I have several prewar pre 10s that have just a nice subtle rounded pin at the surface of the frame with no belly button ground around them. Maybe K frames are different? In any event, I'd rather have that engraving than a parkerized belly button! I'll post some pictures of a VIctory I picked up this morning at a local shop. I never dreamed I'd run across one in this shape that I could afford!

The moon is shining on you - that engraved gun is lot 3670 in the December Rock Island
auction. I had owned it for several years, then sold it to another S&W collector,
who now is selling it via the auction.

I'd need more than the moon shining on me, more like the pot at the end of the rainbow!

Arlo

That is just the early 1910-or-so case coloring. Sometimes it was very vivid,
like that one.

I had two semi-targets ; that one, and one that had a forged front sight , with
adjustable rear sights. It was about the same period of time, but it wasn't engraved.
