Not bad, but I wonder if a handguard with the heat shields would fare any better based on where his slight melting occured, right where the plastic handguard came in contact with the barrel nut and front retainer.

No, because the plastic of the handguard has a direct metal contact with the barrel that conducts the heat. The heat shield is simply to protect the firer's hand.

When I first fired my Sport II, it had these handguards on it. I ran a 60 round string fairly quickly, and the handguard was still comfortable to hold.

Agree, that was my point. The heat shields are only in the middle and do nothing to protect the plastic ends. Well, no need to upgrade the handguard if anyone was thinking about it.

Even if I wanted the looks of an original style hand guard on a rifle instead of any type of aftermarket drop in or a free float system, I would still spend a few dollars and get an original style hand guard with an aluminum heat shield.

Cool video, thanks for posting ! As chance would have it, i traded into a nearly NIB Sport II earlier today (and I immediately started shopping for a deal on some new handguards, which is why this video caught my eye.)
This rifle (presumably) would not be my main SHTF/Zombie Invasion go-to gun, and I don't do recreational 60-rd mag-dumps, so now after seeing that it's the ends of the grips that are prone to heat damage, something heat shields won't do anything for, I'm thinking I'm probably fine with the stock grips (but i love the look and feel of the Magpul handguard, so if I can score a deal, I'm still probably gonna get them .)

I currently have Magpul handguards on mine--very comfortable, but I haven't heated them up yet.

Black, carbine-length MOE. Quite comfortable! last night I also attached a short rail section.
I was at a shop today that had quite an assortment of ARs and handled one with GI handguards. After the Sport and Magpul handguards they did indeed feel bulky.
