Visiting NYC - any pointers/advice

I agree with everything you said above. I am not as familiar with restaurants as you seem to be so I appreciate the tip on good Portuguese in JC. I'll make a point of taking some clients there and letting you know how it goes. That said,
Sorry Chief, Seabra's is in Newark, also check out Dinosaur BBQ,who just opened. In JC.I like Laico's for old school Italian, all the JC politicos have dined there for 40 years.
Yep Wolfgang's on Park is the best IMHO and they are really good people to deal with. I'm over Peter Luger, they are beginning to cruise on their reputation alone and quality has begun to decline.
Happy Dining Chief and stay safe.see you on the trains.

10-4. Thank you!

First advice is, don't go.

But if you must go, I would recommend taking a few small pocket knives that you wouldn't mind losing since one may get confiscated at the entrance to some of the attractions you intend to visit.

Send me a PM if you'd like. I'd be happy to invite you, your wife and daughter to a nice steakhouse.

Big Chief:

Are you sure you're a yankee? Seriously, what an extremely kind and generous offer. Much obliged, but the wife and kids (daughter & 15 yr. old eating machine that is my son) have our days and evenings planned out. If I'm lucky, they'll let me look at the arms/armor section of the museum, or maybe visit the Intrepid. If you are ever in the Austin, TX area, please let me know and we'll see about tying on the feedbag TEXAS style.

Again, thank you very much for your kindness.

Warmest regards,

Dave

You're quite welcome sir. Enjoy your trip and Happy Anniversary!

"Tying on the feedbag"....I like that; only in Texas. :)

I have never felt safer than in the past 15 years, even in the Ironbound section of Newark or my old town of JC.
Even in the ironbound section? I thought that that area had become a very nice place a long time ago. As a child in the late fifties to early sixties, I had no fear of going there to a scientific supply place, and in the eighties I actually took a date (now Mrs. 520) down there because I thought it was such a nice place for a city. Granted, I haven't been there since then.

???

Ive spent a bunch of time in the Iron Bound section. Back in the 1990's they would steal your car or break in and take what ever was good. Heck some guys were trying to steal a car no less than 50' away from me. One time they stole tools from a plumbers car while he was working in the building. They went around the block and sold the tools to guys working in the same building...

It was never as bad as the west side but it wasnt great...

Down Neck was seemingly decent and safer.

Now most of the old buildings are gone and new homes have been put up.

I had some good times over there I was sad when all my customers closed or moved away...

I knew of a company that was located in the Iron Bound section from post ww2 until the late 1960s. The owner told me that the day they had to drive past a Army Tank to get to work was enough for him. They moved to Roussle Park , I think. The story always stuck with me.

Another guy I know on South Street, they stole the brass from the sky lights. Then they dropped in from the roof, they could not really get stuff out other than a rope through the sky light so they didnt get much. Just a giant PIA and mess.

My wife and I went a few years ago.
I was pleasantly surprised about how nice right at everyone was - NOT what I was suspecting from New Yorkers....
Have fun - Don't miss Central Park!

The Ironbound section is just about the best neighborhood in Newark, the Portuguese and now the Brazilians take pride in their surroundings,Now it has al fresco cafes, restaurants, boutiques and looks like Lisbon....but the rest of Newark still leaks in from time to time so on my monthly visits I keep my guard up at night when straying off Ferry st.
Lots of great small places so if you want to take the wife out again, I would be happy to offer some suggestion.

Well, the bags are packed, we've checked in on-line, and we are ready to start the pilgrimage to NYC tomorrow. Many thanks to all of you who responded with advice, suggestions and funny stories. I appreciate your taking the time to share with me, and I look forward to writing a book report once I get back to Texas.

Again, much obliged!

Regards,

Dave

DO NOT MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO EAT A SABRETT HOT DOG, PREFERABLY WITH MUSTARD AND RED ONIONS! LOOK FOR THE UMBRELLAS WHICH ARE YELLOW AND BLUE AND HAVE SABRETT ON THEM. THAT'S THE ONLY REASON I'D EVER GOP BACK TO NYC.

I put the feedbag on that horse in post #10. :D

Check out the NRA museum kiosk on 43rd street. But go early. The lines are long to see the 10 round magazine.

hello DOD,

me a south texan went to NY last year and loved every minute of it.

we stayed in Manhattan and never felt the need for a knife or a gun with my family.

we want to go back. I want some more Lombardi's Pizza and Brooklyn Lager on tap!!!!!!!!

Personally, I thought the Empire State Building was a waste of time and money. Too many people up there, takes forever to enter compared to the cost. I went up at night time, so day time might be different. I was told to go up at the near the end of daylight so you can experience both day and night however we did not make it there till late in the evening.

agreed on the comfortable shoes. I pedometer showed I walked 24 miles in 3 days.

enjoy and save some Brooklyn Lager for me.

So how was the trip????

Inquiring minds want to know :D

Howdy ya'll! Well, we had a BLAST! Except for one bus driver, everyone we met was nice to us. The weather wasn't good for me - rainy, windy, and cold. and I'm arthritic as an old dog. We cruised by the Statue of Liberty because the boat docks were washed away from Sandy. We rode the hansom cabs through Central Park, visited Ground Zero, saw a Broadway play (the Lion King) and Mrs. Double-O got to go shopping at Tiffany's. We met some really nice, funny New Yorkers from Firefighters, to cabbies, to waiters and cooks. Over the years, our favorite vacation site has been Washington, DC. It looks like NYC is a close contender now. My thanks again to all of youse guys for your help, advice, and friendship.

Here are a few photos of the trip.

Best regards,

Dave

Glad you enjoyed your trip, seeing is believing.

I guess the negative comments before your trip just didn't materialize.:)

Good and bad everywhere.
