I am sorry to keep asking questions about the 617, but I am just trying to learn what not to do before I get mine.

I was at Walmart the other day looking at some ammo for when I get the 617. They have a bulk box of 550 for $19, I think it was Federal. I know it was copper plated, will tese run ok in a 617?

Yes. Federal 36 gr. bulk pack .22s are my favorite for my k frame .22s. Cabela's has put them on sale a few times over the last couple of months and probably will again. Until then, $19 is about as good a price on .22s as you can get every day. I wouldn't stock up at that price however because I expect ammo prices will trend down ward back to pre-Obama levels. During the Bush years Wal-Mart charged about $8.79 for the same package.

One of the joys of a .22 revolver is that you are not limited to certain types of ammo such as with a semi auto. Anything you can stuff in the cylinder should go bang, CB caps, shorts sometimes are fun/useful. The Federal bulk packs have a good rep for quality so should work fine in a 617.

Thanks for the replies. I cant wait to get my 617. I will be able to afford more fun time at the range.

In my experience, the use of Federal .22's work best in my J and K frame revolvers. The Remington brand seems to be just a tad fatter and give me problems with loading into the cylinders, requiring much more of a firm push to seat, whereas the Federals seat easily. Anyone else have this experience? Its on all (about 6) of my .22 revolvers.

The Federal 555 packs are $15.47 at Walmart here in Ft Worth. Winchester 550 is a little higher and Remington 555 a couple of dollars higher. Remington has been very poor ammo in my 617. Lots of failures to fire and kind of scatters over the target. Winchester a little better in both areas. Federal is by far the best in mine. Winchester and Remington have both gone up in the last couple of months.

In the 1990s I had to quit firing Win. Wildcat because they quit lubing the bullets. Wildcats had been performing well but without lube they leaded badly. About the end of 1999 I had a couple of bulk packs of Rem. .22 that made variable noises including a few in each brick that only made a sput sound. Their accuracy was poor. The two packages came from different 3rd world countries. I believe Federal still makes all their own .22s. Federal's target ammo is among the best but not worth buying for revolvers unless you spend all your time bench resting for groups. I took 2nd place in an indoor bullseye league last winter with Federal bulk pack and a 617. I don't doubt it's accurate enough to win at the state level with.

I use the federal bulk packs in my 617. I get only two to six misfires per box, and those misfires usually ignite the second time around. They do get harder to insert as the the gun gets dirty, but i'm happy with 'em.

Fed 550 packs from WallyWorld, $15.57, are perfect - if you miss, you can always blame your poor marksmanship on the 'cheap ammo' - not that I do that... My 63's & 617 love 'em. My wife's P22 likes Fed AutoMatch - good thing - I bought 10 325 rd boxes! Too rich for me... ween a 63/617 on the frugal stuff. CCI Stingers for feral ferret protection!

i shoot at least 1200 rounds of federal in my model 18 a month & clean it once a month,as one poster pointed out the remington has to be pushed in the chambers & the federal falls in.every time i go to walmart to restock they never have enough federal but plenty of rem. & win. ,rem. is 2.00 a box of 550 pac. higher.i belive most folk's pefer federal for function & price,i will not use win. wildcats.

I know someone that works for Winchester in Alton IL and I was told that Walmart has been purchasing a lot of ammo for a special sale.

My local Walmart confirmed that there will be a special sale of ammo when they fully introduce guns back into their stores. I was not told when but I will try to get the information.

That's the beauty of rimfire revolvers. They'll shoot anything you want to shoot in them. Shorts, longs and long rifle, lead, copper plated, you name it.

Some will shoot clean, some dirty and some won't be accurate but they will shoot all of them!

I like the Federal Bulkpack very much and have shot a ton of it from my 617. In all fairness, CCI standard velocity is slightly more accurate than the Federal and it burns a bit cleaner as well. But, the Federal is less than 1/2 the price of the CCI, it gives me more than acceptable results, and hence, I continue to use it.
