The wife the kid and I were at Walmart getting our groceries and I had printed out some photos but the clerk running the counter was nowhere in sight. So I see one of the blueshirts standing by a shopping cart nearby so I asked if she worked there and she said she did but that she wasn't on the clock and that if I needed to, to head over to the electronics section. I thanked her and started to walk away and then I heard her say mumbling "I'm on break for crying out loud what do you want." Well I don't think she intended for me to hear it but my hearing is usually better than most and that got my goat big time. I turned around and told her that wasn't called for and that I wasn't rude to her and she had no cause to be rude to me. What I got was "I wasn't being rude" and "I'm on my break." Another employee heard it and walked over and I told her what happened. She promptly got the manager and had another employer ring up the photos. As I told the manager, I can't talk to people like that in my job and I darn sure am not going to put up with it especially when there was no reason for it. He informed me the employee would be spoken to.
Then at the checkout the woman running through our stuff dropped a bottle of laundry soap and it broke the seal and it was leaking, she knew it because she started cleaning it up put it back and told us it was fine. I told her it wasn't fine and that I didn't need it leaking all over the place. "So do you want to go get another one?" My wife decided to go get it because at that point in time I was ready to tell the cashier where it could go that might stop leaks entirely. I really wish I could afford to shop elsewhere but we are pinching pennies these days and we go where the sales are. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't step foot into that den of dodo's and societal rejects.

The one where I go is, unlike some others in this town, generally staffed by people who may not know a hell of a lot but are reasonably polite and try to help if asked. Just lucky, I guess.

In some stores I've been known to say to checkers, not roughly but quietly, "That's Mister Dude to you, son."

I agree with Zagged, nothing but polite service around here. Even some knowledge in the electronics dept.

I really hate going there too, but they got us by the balls when they put the hometown stores out of business.

This is WalMarts aim. We have one that I do business with on a regular basis simply because of this very reason and, you should see the people that work there. Most of them (women included) have tats everywhere you can see and dress like and come across like pure trash. If you ever get a chance watch the documentary "The high cost of low prices" it's a real eye opener.

Walmart employees don't want to be there anymore than we do and it shows in thier attitude towards customers.

I found a soft sided pistol case in the clearence isle the other day but was unsure of the price. So I looked for the self scanners some walmarts have hanging on the columns around the store none to be found. But I did walk up clothing department by the dressing rooms and found two employees standing there at counter with a computer and price scanner. I asked if they could price check my item. They said that I could do it and moved out of the way so I could use the scanner thingy attached to the computer. How LAZY can you get I didnt realize that walmart was self service. I didnt get the case because it wasnt worth the 20 bux, thought it might be 5 bux or so.

My son did time as a night stocker in a wallyworld store. If he stopped stocking to answer or give direction to a customer after the customer left he would be chewed out for not doing enough work. They should have "Don't talk to me" signs on their backs. Does not really matter, only 1 in 5 ever know the right answer to customer questions. Its not the store Sam Walton started

If one thinks about it one can't expect much out of the employees because they are not paid much but thinking about it a little further and trying to deal with them one realizes why they are not paid very well. Larry

I am old enough to remember when Sam promised everything would be American made (right). My wife gets upset but refuse to deal with them.

Our local Walmart never has much in the way of ammo; however, the staff are very nice. Always super polite, downhome friendly and helpful. Of course its a small town Texas store, so that might be why. All the other stores and store clerks in town are friendly, helpful and polite also. About the only attitude I have observed is what you might call sunny.

I quit going into any walmart after my last experience at the local one.

Everyone everywhere bad mouths walmart. For me, we shop there all the time and I dont have one gripe about it. I especialy enjoy sitting on a bench up front and people watch while theresa shops. I am a regular there.
About three months ago theresa bought a computer chair. At home we opened the box to put it together and found $750s worth of extra loot in the box. A couple of smart phones, bunch of computer games etc.
We took it back. Evidently a employee had a scam going where they would stuff their hand selected loot, tape the box shut, buy the item, (computer chair) and no doubt take the chair back and get their money back too. They already had suspected a clerk and had fired her and were happy to get the eveidence.
This town/state has the right to work law. Waitress`s get $2.13 a hour and tips. No doubt walmart is probley considered a good place to work here.
Sure they sell china stuff. Is there such a thing as a store anywhere that doesnt?
The way I see it, its a free country and in theory anyone else can do what sam did. I know the standard answer has been when I have complained about certain laws in this country has been, well get the law changed! There is about as much chance in doing that as being another sam walton, isnt there?

I understand your concerns David; and poor customer service to me is a big disqualifying characteristic for future business.

That said, I sympathize with them to some degree. These aren't highly trained, well compensated sales people and service managers. They are often doing the best they can for wages few of us could live on.

I think there are a number of reasons Sam Walton must be twirling as I write this. I doubt he envisioned the degree to which the octopus has influenced American jobs moving to other countries to get production prices down so the manufacturers could land huge contracts. I'll always believe that they helped speed the demise of Schrade.

Guess it may depend on where you are at. When at the Eastern shore, WM employees seem to think they are doing you a favor by being there. A really 'I could care less attitude'. Around here, 'Winchester' most are cheerful and conduct themselves as if they are glad to have the job. There is a sour puss no and then, but you learn to steer clear of them. I am not above calling one down, if required.
