I called Walter's shop today to check on a re-finishing and was saddened to hear that Walter passed away on 7-17-09 following a heart attack. For those of you not familiar with his work, Mr. Birdsong developed a number of firearm finishes including "Black-T" which is used on plenty of law enforcement and military weapons. His business was so successful and well thought of that he didn't even have to advertise.

Perhaps most impressive about Mr. Birdsong was that if you called the shop, most likely, you got to talk directly to him. He was probably the nicest person I have ever dealt with in the firearms and associated industries, and was happy to sit there and talk to you as long as you wanted about firearms finishes and anything else.

Luckily, it appears that his son Walter Jr. will be continuing the good business that they do. Nonetheless, R.I.P. Walter, you will be missed.

I had Walter re-finish a Browning Hi-Power for me in his Black-T finish a few years ago. When I called the shop, I spoke with him directly, and he was great to converse with.

I hadn't heard that, thanks for passing it along. I agree with everything you said, Walter was one helluva nice guy.
