Mr. Walter D. Ehlers, who was awarded the Medal of Honor, during the D Day Invasion, has passed away.

I had the honor of knowing Mr. Ehlers when I worked at Ford Motor Company. He was a purchasing manager, and I learned of his heroism while reading a book at the local library. I finally got enough courage to ask Mr. Ehlers if he was the same, and he said he was. We discussed the event once, only briefly, and almost in passing.

I never bothered to mention his honor to others, since it seemed he was more comfortable with his privacy. At his retirement dinner, only his managerial skills, and care for his fellow employees was mentioned.

If you want to picture the Greatest Generation, it would be Walter Ehlers' image.

Rest In Peace, Lieutenant.

I'm finding the Forum to be a source of current events. Mr. Ehlers was a participant in a D-Day documentary on the Military Channel in which he takes the camera to the scene of the action for which he received the Medal of Honor. A very modest man, he mentions how heartbroken he was about the death of his brother. IIRC, he said he would have rather had his brother back than receive the medal.

If one reads the citations describing the actions of these people, one is absolutely stunned and often moved to tears. That 'one' is myself. Vaya con Dios, Mr. Ehlers.

Rest in Peace Mr. Ehlers sir. Thank you for being a great Patriotic American and for your service and sacrifices. America just got less great.

God bless America and her sons and daughters that sacrificed so much so we can all live free. I think about Mr. Ehlers and his selfless actions in the face of such great danger and adversity and I get a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye. Adequate words just don't seem to exist but then I suppose that's okay. Actions speak louder that words and we are defined by what we DO and not what we SAY.

God bless Mr. Ehlers and may he rest in peace.
