A few months back Field & Stream opened up in a Dicks SG's store near my home. Today I was determined to go there for the first time.

I have not seen that much ammo stocked in a gun store in these parts for many many years! They had .22's "falling off the shelf" and at relatively descent prices (not cheap - but descent). No restrictions, many many brands and variations, cases of shot shells all over at REALLY good prices, and the crowd at the Gun Counter was 2 -3 deep! WOW!!! The last time I saw a gun store that well stocked was when I was at the Kittery Trading Post in Maine!

I am sure the small LGS's are not too thrilled with F&S opening up, but for the consumers it will really help out at least from an ammo situation. Some of the LGS's in my area are STILL gauging on the rimfire ammo and the new F&S store may open their eyes.

We just had a Dicks converted to a Dicks and Field&Stream in Colonie NY.

Yes they did seem to have a lot of ammo on hand some at decent prices. Large gun counter with many handguns displayed under glass. (of course the majority were bottom feeder plastic wonders.) Help was sort of friendly and depending on who you talked with they had a couple with decent gun knowledge. Speaking of help at the gun counter you had to pull a tab like at the sliced meat counter at the grocery store and wait for you number to be called. Then you could ask questions and even possibly get handed a pistol with a huge trigger lock on it (after showing your permit)

My wife did buy a couple bricks of .22, just grab them and go to the check out. Then a clerk (that handles both Dicks and F.S. says Oh that ammo can fit a pistol I need to see your permit.

My wife dug it out and at the same time managed to put her other elbow in my side as I said see what happens when you don't go to a real gun shop!

FWIW they did have a lot of guns and gun stuff there but I will stick to what I call The Real Gun Shops in the area. I have plenty of real shops to hit. From where I live everything is at least a 20 mile ride.

Lets just say I was not that impressed with the new era gun shop.

We took a trip up to the F&S store in Katy not long after it opened. Quite honestly, I didn't see a thing there that I couldn't get for about the same price as at the Academy in Rosenberg or the Gander Mountain in Sugar Land. Maybe I was expecting more, given the pre-opening hype.

I buy golf stuff there, but the gun counter at our local Dick's is in name only. I've never seen a customer there. They are on the same street as Palmetto State Armory, Academy, and Cabela's, and offer no competition. Maybe F&S will help them out.

I would agree. I did pick up a new SW22 Victory there as part of their Black Friday sale for a fair price, but I had already researched it and knew what I was buying.

There is a Field&Stream a couple of towns over and I went there a few weeks ago. They had a sign 10% off guns. I asked if the guns were already marked down or 10% off the marked price. I was told off the marked price so I got a number and waited. Same girl that told me 10% off the marked price showed me the gun and I said so you will take off 10%. She said that was not one of the guns on sale. I left. I was not impressed. Larry

The Field and Stream in the town we recently moved from closed after being open about 1 year. Evidently couldn't compete with BP, Cabela's, Gander, all in the same county.
And less than 5 years ago, there were NO big box sporting stores in the area.

Now, where we live, Academy has just opened about an hour away. Wife and I went last week. Prices seemed a little better than the BP and Cabela's I had gotten used to seeing.

Called the new F&S in Ches.Va. about an add for a shotgun I had been looking for. I was very specific about and the clerk said they had four. This was just before closing. I was there when they opened up the nest day. The clerk said "sorry the person you talked to looked at the wrong one". They only had the youth model. I talked to the manager and his attitude was " Who cares". Sent a message to the home office but no response. Wonder if these folks are related to Lyman?

At Dicks I pay $9.99 for a 100 pack of CCI Mini-mag 22 LR and at the LGS's they are $17.99 for the same box! I am all for supporting the small business man, but will NOT pay 180% MORE for the same ammo!

Or you can buy it for $7.99 shipped or less online and save the hassle of driving to the store.

An employee made an easy mistake. These people usually have no clue about guns. Not seeing why you even had to complain

Wasn't upset at the 30 mile drive just the attitude of the clerk and manager.

Anybody finding the F&S brand ammo at the F&S stores?
A local Dick's had the ammo in 9mm, .40 & .45, they were out of the .223 Rem.
