Trying to determine if the following was an "FBI" 1076...

serial # VCU 3455
Product code 105901 indicates FBI pistol
No warning on side about magazine disconnect
BUT: marked "Kentucky State Police"

Could this be one that the FBI returned and then S&W sold it to Kentucky State Police?

Any thoughts or info appreciated...Thanks...Roger

I will be interested to see what experts have to say, but my best guess is the Product Code simply specifies a configuration which happens to be one of the FBI codes as well as a configuration that Kentucky State Police chose to piggy back FBI contract.

I have seen piggy back orders before for example the 83 West Va Public Service 4566TSW Pistols piggy backed on the same configuration as the WVSP except not marked WVSP.

I’d bet it went straight to KSP when they issued them.

I had a FFL when I was in the New Orleans FBI and S&W was offering returned 1076s to Agents for $300. I don’t remember how many I ordered for Agents and cops and clerks but it was a lot - I had to get a big 4 wheeled cart to pick them all up from the mail room. Three bills got you the gun, a couple of magazines, a box, and whatever grip variation the former owner had put on it. The Bureau okayed it on the provision they would never be approved as POWs.

Some guys loved their issue 1076s and connived to hang on to them long after the Bu wanted them back. I was qualifying a guy in Boise on his until 2005, when they threatened to send him a paycheck consisting of all zeroes if he didn’t return his to the mothership.

Did all FBI 1076 pistols have a magazine disconnect safety and "warning" on right side of the slide?

They didn’t have a magazine safety - they would shoot with no mag. I don’t remember the issued ones having the warning. That may have been added afterwards.

KSP most likely piggy backed their order for the same configuration. It's unlikely that it went to FBI first then to KSP.. My FBI 1076 does not have the mag warning on the slide, as far as I know they could have been marked both with/without warning, all should not have the disconnect..

Even when you are smart enough know what the "rule" is - Smith & Wesson serial numbers are just as often "exceptions" especially with three letter serial numbers. Might be worth a letter or at least a call as noted above while you can still get one.

Really? Did Smith & Wesson lose all their records? I’ve called them numerous times to verify FBI guns that were listed for sale on gunbroker etc. Every single time they were able to give me information via serial number. It would be a shame if they got rid of their info. I’m sorry to hear that.

Hey Roger, for what's it worth....my two cents. If it is marked KSP (Kentucky State Police) I would bet it is not an FBI gun. Sadly, Dave from PA would have been the one to ask if he were still with us. He was a real authority on the FBI model's.

Hope you have been well. Tell Julie I said hello.

Best regards, Bob.
