Hello guys and gals. I have a 27-2 that I would like to turn into a pinto. I am going to call fords to get a quote. I have looked on ebay and have found a barrel from and 27 and a cylinder. Im looking for the most practical and cost efficient way. In my area there isn't a gunsmith that I know of that would do the swap so im thinking fords would be the easiest. The barrel and cylinder cost would be well over $300. Would a 686 barrel fit on the N frame? Thanks for the help.

Just sold this one, but I can highly recommend Ford's.

I'm not getting the reason if you already have a 27-2 you need parts ?

I have a blue 27-2 and would like to make a pinto out of it. I don't have extra parts. I was curious if it would be easier to send it to fords and have it done or buy a barrel and cylinder off ebay and have it swapped out by a gunsmith.

Yes PINTO--aka-- Two Tone and/or Half Plate.

... or "Bright-Nickel" as the factory invoices in the 1950's referred to them. The engraved 357 Pintos are some of my favorites...

A couple that were factory engraved by Sigfried Rentzschke:

A couple factory engraved by Harry Jarvis:

... A few more...

... and a couple of pre-war Outdoorsmans that I had engraved and Pinto-ed.

Check the forum sale ads. I have a 3 1/2" pre 27 barrel and cylinder. Fords re-finished the barrel about 4 years ago along with making me a couple of Pinto's, but I never got around to using this barrel.

I had Fords make me four pintos out of a couple of pre-27's 3 1/2" barrels and a couple pre 17's. They do very good work as can be seen with Blue Ridge Boy's picture of one.

You can just send a 27 frame to Fords for re-blue and have them install the barrel/cylinder or have a gunsmith install the barrel and cylinder if you have a good frame to use. My gunsmith charges me about $40. to switch barrels/cylinders.

Fords does refinishing, you won't need to send them any extra parts, they will simply nickel plate your cylinder and barrel, and blue everything else. As to one of your earlier questions, no, a 686 (L frame) barrel will not fit on an N frame.

Fords has gun smithing charges for extras like removing, refitting barrels, front sights and case hardening. When its all said and done with shipping you'll be looking at $500-$600. + and their 6-8 week time frame usually turns into 4-6 months.

But boy, do their re-finishes look nice.

I just sent in a 4-screw 44 Mag last week. This is pretty much word for word what I was told.

You run out of Birdseye Daniel ?

Yes, and for some reason on the pair that needs the least amount of it to make. :)

At least they are still maple though.

Actually, I just haven't come across a J frame set in Birdseye. However, that should change soon as I am about 2 months from having Mr. Spegel make me a couple sets.
