Water Heaters

One of the Reni (sp?) tankless hot water heaters. This way you only make and use hot water when its needed. I know the gas versions are very efficient. (Spendy though)

This is for a son that is having money problems and he needs something that will fit into a tight budget.

In our area gas is a little cheaper to operate than electric. But gas heaters cost more and seem to need replaced sooner.

According to the paper over the weekend the natural gas prices for next year are dropping 75% over this years prices and the providers are locking in next year's rates. No guarantee for years beyond 2010.
Heating bills here in WY are way down over fuel oil and electricity in MT form 2003-2008 when we finally sold the house.
I would definitely go with gas.

It will cost less initially to replace whatever is there with a like model.

Thanks everyone,I just wanted to make sure I was not off base with this.Son had some "friends " at work who are experts( you know the kind!!!) tell him to get rid of his year old gas heater and get an electric one.I just could not see the benefit in the long run!

FWIW pay attention too them,,,I have two water heaters, one at each end of the house, came home from work one day and the house is flooded, ruptured water heater. House repaired water heater replaced, it was in the house, the other is in the garage, well waited and watched the second one two years later water was seeping out of the bottom, it was replaced that day

Whatever you do stay away from Whirlpool.
Google "Whirlpool water heater problems" and you'll see why. I got screwed by them and will no longer buy their products.

With gas prices dropping, I am so happy to have chosen a gas fired tankless job, for my (hopefully) soon to be completed home.

Gas heat also.

With my luck gas prices will triple after this year.

Gas should always be cheaper and more efficient than electric. In much of the country powerplants use gas to turn turbines and generate electricity, and gas HW heaters will recover MUCH faster than electric if all the hot water is used up. I have heard some good things about the REMI system but I don't try anything like that until it has been proven long term.

gas water heater, as long as my well in pumping I have hot water. My tank is I bet 1982 vintage, ssuepct it will die sometime, will replace with the same, only around $400

pretty much my whole home is gas, i average $60-70 a month, high is close to $160 in winter, summer about nothing(just dryer, h2o and stove)

electric runs me just $100....pretty year around, but we have cut that back 30% in the last year.....not sure how

Those tankless water heaters are fine unless you have, like me, a big Jacuzzi with 15 gallons per minute flowing into it. I would have had to get maybe 3 tankless heaters in parallel to keep up.

Most of the tankless ones are designed for about 5 gallons per minute. Great for a shower, but if you run the washer too, or something else that takes lots of water, and you have cold feed water, expect to get cool water out.

But with my two 65 gallon gas water heaters, no problems.

Before I sold my last house I replaced the water heater. It worked fine but was looking tired and turned out to be 26 years old. It was gas.
