WD-40

WD-40 is the best treatment for off-road motorcycle chains, not because it is a good lubricant, which it is not, but because the spray washes the grit off the chain. No product has been shown to give longer chain life, other than a continupous supply of oil fro something like a Scottoiler.
 
The full article pulls up on my iPad. The experiment ended badly. A picture is worth a 1000 cans of WD-40. I hope the car was both paid off and insured. I would not mention to the adjustor I was running WD-40 as the engine oil.

WD works great as a solvent/cleaner for my shotgun barrels (as does brake cleaner). That said, is not a good lube or protectant.
 
I always have had a can or two around and it has always worked well. If it didn't, I wouldn't continue to use it 50 years later. I mostly use it on stubborn auto repairs as it seems to loosen just about anything. I prefer Ballistol for firearms..

Among it's other uses, I found it good for removing, sticky type glue from windshields, and containers I use in the shop when removing labels, and or Sharpie notes from plastic boxes without and damage to the surface. :)

As a side note: if you run into some idiot who doesn't know how to park, a small can of WD 40, sprayed on his windshield might cure him/or her, of such lack of conseration of others. Does no damage, but is a bear to get off. Especially since the first thing they want to do is hit the washer button. Just makes it worse. :D
 
Spraying an idiots window might lead to a confrontation. These confrontations sometimes turn badly as seen in Florida. Is somebody parking poorly worth that kind of result.

Not sure of the laws in Va on spraying a lubricant on a windshield, but if it causes an accident then I would guess the sprayer would be civilly responsible.

Like walking out from the convenience store while the person is doing it, because somebody parked in a handicap space? Is it worth getting the snot knocked out of a person, or going to prison?

I know guys that spray WD40 on their fishing lures and are very successful catchers......
 
It is a Water Displacement; many rumors about how it has fish oil in it (and why folks believe it helps catch fish). False; it is a petroleum distillate.
 
I kept a can of WD40 in my Honda Civic back in the early 70s. In rainy weather, when I hit a puddle, the motor would die. I could spray a wire box under the hood and it would start right up. That would last for weeks.
 
Re: OP. Young people have been doing igit things w/ cars since long before the days of chicken, etc. Killing a motor ... cooking a car ... it's nothing new. What is new is the ability of just about anyone to put up for view a video of the whole train wreak! It is not far off from earlier slap stick humor ala The Three Stooges, etc.

As far as WD-40 goes, it is fine for general uses around the house and shop. It works on guns and fishing reels, etc. Not, it is not long term useful for guns. But, if it were as much the witches brew that popular mythology says, there would be a bunch of rifles and pistols and shotguns in the city dump/landfill rendered inoperable by a spray/wips down w/ WD-40. It knocks paper wasps dead darn near instantly. Works OK as a gun cleaner if break cleaner isn't handy. (At least break cleaner is great on stainless guns. Not sure about new or old blueing.) Great for removing stickum or pine sap and rattle can spray paint from hands. It's good for all kinds of stuff but I can't imagine why anyone would use it as engine oil although it might work OK for a quick engine flush. Let me know if you try that.
 
I used to work with an older guy that used to wash his hands with it , said it was great for arthritis . When I worked for LMT at the Cape on the Titan , we had a PM that was for when it went to the pad . Every week we had to fill up a sprayer with WD40 and spray the bare metal that was exposed . You haven't lived until you are out in the wind spraying that stuff . It would get all over you , in your hair , up your nose . To this day I can't look at the stuff . In the long run , it did nothing , the metal was anodized .
 
I use WD40 on my hand tools (wrenches, ratchets, etc) after use to keep them clean and rust-free. Works great.
 
Besides as a bug killer and a fire starter, I used it on road case wheels, piano hinges, Floyd Rose locking tremolos and removing the sticker residue from pickguards and guitar finishes.

I've been known to wipe a gun, or two, down with it.
