Hello to All !

I have noticed some of you are ex NYPD LEOs, so I am probably in the right back yard with my question. I know that officers were issued the S&W Mod. 10 in 4" for a long time through the 60s and 70s. How long were they actually issued this weapon? what came after? And what do they carry now?

And what did plain clothes detectives carry? Their own private purchase weapons? Was something issued to them?

really appreciate your help and thanks !!:)

Revolvers were never issued, the MOS (Member of Service) purchased it and they had a choice. In the '60s-'80s it was the S&W M10, Colt Official Police, Colt Metropolitan Mark III, Ruger Police Service Six, and Dan Wesson Model II, it was .38Spl only with a fixed barrel and sights. The Smith was by far the most popular. These were DA/SA capable. The Smith M36 and Colt Detective Special were popular offduties, no Airweights authorized.

In '87 stainless revolvers in DAO were first authorized. Older MOS were grandfathered with their revolvers, but all new hires got a choice in the Ruger GPNY or Speed Six or Police Service Six and the S&W M64 NY1. Offduties were Ruger SPNY, 2" S&W 64 and 640.

In '94 9mms were first authorized. Again, the blue and stainless revolvers were grandfathered, but all new hires could only use the 9mm. The Glock 19, S&W 5946, and SIG P226DAO were available. Offduties include S&W 3953TSW and 3914DAO, Kahr K9 (no longer authorized, but grandfathered), Glock 26, Beretta 8000D Mini Cougar (no longer made so I doubt its even available), and SIG P239DAO. With the 9mms the Glocks are the most popular.

Offduty .38s were still allowed till around '97/'98. After that only 9mms were authorized for new hires, all older MOS were grandfathered again.

Wow! That is really great info.
I assume then, plainclothes officers (detectives, etc) were authorized any of the offduty weaps you mention, or did they enjoy more flexibility in what they carried? Thanks!

Alan, just saw the post with my post regarding my model 10 past history. Sorry to say I was never a member of the NYCPD.
Spent 30 years working for Con Edison at the Astoria Location. Did have the opportunity to meet some NYCPD members over the years especially when someone turned up missing from Riker's Island. Frank

Plainclothes carried either their duty or off duty, thats it, no special considerations. There are other weapons authorized for undercover situations, but nothing standard.

Forgot to mention, the S&W M&P9 fullsize and compact are slated to replace the above mentioned three third generation 9mms, pending approval.
