Weaver top mount

Has anyone got first hand experience with Weaver extensions that allow for mounting a red dot on an m&p 9? I'm looking at the type that connects to the bottom rail, forms around the pistol, and provides a weaver rail along the top.

I know leupold makes a red dot that replaces the rear sight, and it looks unbelievable but at around $350 it's a little much, and I don't fancy removing my iron sight at all.

I've got one. I mounted it but never used it. It sits about a centimeter above the slide, or maybe even more. It looked pretty weird.

Then I realized I had no way to holster it so I took it back off.
