Weekend Project

I finally finished a project that's been sitting in my shop for over a year and a half. We bought these two park benches for our front porch about 25 years ago. Through the years they had become pretty weather worn and my wife said they needed go. I kind of like them so I decided to refinish them in my spare time, which basically means I kept putting them off.

They finally became a priority lately because they have been in my way in the shop and I've had to move them around a couple of times, and they're pretty heavy. So, since it's been raining the past few weekends I completely disassembled them, sanded them down, refinished the wood and painted the metal hardware. I put them all back together this weekend and now they're as good to go for another 25 years or so.

They look great. Fine job on the refinishing. Now your wife might not let you sit on them because they are too nice.

It's hard to really reproduce a color accurately in a picture, I had the double roll out doors to my shop wide open when I snapped the picture so they were getting a lot of light on them. It's actually "antique red" and in real life it's a good bit darker, more like the color of an old Farmall Tractor.

When I bought my park benches, they were all new and pretty. After about 3 years on a covered porch they were pretty ratty! I coated the Iron in a rust inhibiting paint then finished in medium gloss black the wood was sanded and painted forest green. Next time I will replace the junk wood with teak. The first renovation has lasted 10 or 12 years, the last 3 in the weather on the condo back porch! At this rate, the first rehab will outlast me!
