Welding quality new and old

Most welders that I know and I know quite a few, pride themselves on not only how well does it hold but how does it look.
Bird drop looking welds a no go! Course I have been retired over 22 years and perhaps I just live in the past!
A quick anecdote;
When I was working at McDonnell Douglas in Columbus, Ohio as a Quality Engineer, even though we went thru the std hiring process Corporate wanted copies of our resumes to go over before issuing our stamps and giving us disposition authority for rejected material. Not long after on of the other fairly new Quality Engineers was quietly moved from her position to a clerking job. It seems that locally they didn't really vett the resumes and she had on hers that she was a certified welder among other things. Corporate actually checked them out and when they called the company that she was a certified welder for I guess they started laughing and told them she worked the front desk and had asked the "guys" to show her how to weld and that was it. The company decided to be nice and gave her three choices, take a clerks position, quit, or get terminated.

Welding flat and welding fixed pipe are completely different animals. Then you through in the specs that it must be downhill and you loose half the applicants.

When I went to a birthday party in Sparks Nev. two years ago that was at Water World,
I had to go to the bathroom and while waiting for the wife and others to finish,
I looked at some of the welds that the large metal columns and knee braces had on them, that suported the roof and large building.
I all of a sudden, got the feeling to start walking to the nearest EXIT !!
They were so Ugly....................... (even with paint over them ).
