A month or so back me and my wife were sitting watching a movie. I was reading something on this site (of course) when she asked me the question. "I was thinking maybe we could look at getting me a pistol for when I go backpacking?" I thought I was dreaming and speechless. My wife isnt into guns or shooting much. Several years ago I think I ruined shooting for her. I took her out with a friend of mine and talked her into shooting his 44mag. Big mistake. So I was happy to see that she wanted to get a pistol. So I suggested maybe we get her a revolver and explained all the benefits. She was sold on a J Frame. I began to look and found a member on here selling a nice Model 36. I bought it and wrapped it up for Christmas. I couldnt wait for her to open it. It took all I had not to give it to her first to open but I let her choose her own gifts to open. She opened it last and it was really great. It felt a little like when Ralphie from a Christmas Story opened his red rider BB gun. I was real proud for some reason. She said "oh you didnt" and laughed.

Today we went out to the range and I began with my confidence builder model 18 to get her used to the function of a revolver. I moved to my 586 so she could get used to the 38's I loaded up. Then she said, "I want to shoot my gun." She shot her model 36 like a pro. Hell she can shoot better than me! So steady and accurate! I had her try two handed and one handed to get a feel for different positions. When she shot one handed at about 7 yards she put 5 shots on the target in one ragged hole the size of a half dollar. I shake like a leaf on a tree haha.

Im a proud husband.

I like the wood stocks that were original to the pistol but she needed a better grip. I put a hogue grip on it. She can get a good grip on it now.

For some reason women are just naturally better than men with handguns. I heard it is because they come with no preconceived ideas and they LISTEN to instructions!! LOL

Just one hint: Be sure she keeps body parts away from the front/sides of the cylinder.....it is not intuitive but is very painful...........

Enjoy the shooting together!!

Of the best pistols, I prefer the original grip, any way excellent peace in the mind

Yep definitely instruct her on how not to hold a revolver. If she blows her nail off let alone a finger then you will never get her to shoot another revolver or for that matter any gun.[ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFBAcz16GvU[/ame]
The 36 is a good gun because it has a decent trigger and the weight of the gun makes shooting 38 spl a good experience.

It is my theory, and has been for years, women have lower body weight and are more stable. Men have body weight above their center of gravity. My wife shoots better than me and has for 43 years now.

On one of our first dates, my wife wanted us to go shoot with her dad. I gladly obliged. At the time he hunted deer with a Ruger Redhawk 44 mag with a 8" barrel and a 4X scope. She picked it up and promptly placed 5 out of six shots in a paper plate at 50 yards offhand. Then reloaded and duplicated the performance at 75 yards.
I really did not want to take my turn as I seriously doubted my ability to duplicate her shooting. But I relented and could not match her shooting at 75 yards.
Over the 34 years we have been married, she has consistently out shot me with a handgun. She will shoot right with me with any rifle but my AR.
My one saving grace is she is not a wing shooter. I need one safe haven to shelter my ego.

LOL

LOL. My deceased wife was one of the best handgun shots I have ever known. She would go to the range for practice and guys would enter the office and exclaim "Do you see what that woman is shooting? She would be practicing with her 2 1/2" Mod 629 which she carried for CCW. BTW, she could clear the X and 10 rings at 50 yds. Her favorite calibur was the 44Mag and carried factory loads (44Mag not 44 Spec).

Nice 36 you picked up! I figure that my wife goes to the range occasionally, she won't complain when I buy stuff. (she doesn't)

Maybe you should practice a little more. (I am no fantastic shot myself) Would hate to have my wife outshoot me. She would get all "cocky" Bob

Back when I was Instructing and teaching the required CCW classes, I came to prefer instructing women. I found that they had no preconceived ideas about how to shoot or that 'they were a good shot already'. They did listen to instructions and THEN they followed instructions and coaching. Women seem to know instinctively that the bs that is shown on TV and in Movies on how to handle guns and shoot was just that bs for dramatics and not for accuracy. We men seem by in large to buy into that John Wayne did it this way nonsense. AND, women are use to doing things that develop fine motor skills. Their eye/hand coordination is usually superb. I had a young lady that had never shot anything in her life. She was crying when it came time that she must shoot or drop out of the course. Buy the time she finished the two day course, she was the best shot there. I had another that had never shot a shot in her life step up to take a one day familiarization course with the H&K MP 5 sub gun. With thirty minutes of instruction she was shooting controlled two shot bursts with the selector switch set on 'full auto'. She also was very accurate. The non shooting spectators started gathering around to watch her shoot. As far as I know she still has never shot anything but a full auto sub machinegun. ... :-)

Don't you know that the conventional "wisdom" on this forum is to throw away the "goodyears" and spend your last penny on "correct" stocks?

Oh, wait ... you are actually shooting this one ... never mind. :)

It pained me to do it. None of my revolvers have anything but nice wood on them!

I've never trained a woman on handguns that wasn't a success for all of the reasons mentioned above. Guys wll argue - "I've always done it this way.", and my response is - "Yes, and you've always been wrong."

Guys have seen the cop and western movies and suggesting that he is doing things incorrectly is a blow to his self image and masculinity. Once he gets beaten by a woman, you have his attention, but not before.

My wife has long been at the level where she says - "If I want your opinion, Dear, I'll ASK for it!" That's when I back off .....

My Mom, a very petite lady, used to do all the Southern Calif. matches with my Dad, a Master Distinguished pistol shooter. She held an NRA Marksman rating. She would shoot my Dads 1937 Colt National Match Govt. Model .45 pistol or her type 2 Colt Woodsman Target Model.
One day she beat F.Bob Chow the great pistoleer, and won a case of beer. Evidently, he thought he won the match and took the beer home. My Mom always laughed about that.
I still have that tired old Woodsman my Dad said had 1,000,000 rds. through it. Big Larry

Now you got to start being real nice to her.....nothing worse than a irate wife that has a gun and can out shoot you! Be nice , very nice.
Armed and dangerous takes on a whole new meaning now .

Back in the day when IPSC matches came to our area I jumped right in. Eventually women shooters showed up and I thought well this is going to be "rich" (Hey, I was young and stupid). Then inevitably I was beat by a woman and that caught my attention! Hey, these gall's can shoot! It didn't take long after that to realise that women are as good or better than men.

Now as my wife seems to pull her shotgun hits low into the crotch area of the B-7 target also got my attention!

It's not just that most women listen better than most men who tend to "know it all", (that's true, but it isn't the only thing.)

Can you thread a needle better than your wife can? My fingers are big and clumsy compared to hers. Women are much better when it comes to precision motor skills. And that's what trigger management is.

Agreed! My wife just acquired a $4000+ Janome sewing machine that speaks four languages and has more features and options than anything I operate. I built her a sewing table years ago and recently modified it for the new machine.

I struggle with saws, hammers and tools that seem to be smarter than I am.
Her new machine threw a shoe. She got out her tool kit, opened the manual and exposed the innards of the machine. I left the room .....

In short order, she had it back in working order, better than before.

Watching her thread her serger leaves me shaking my head. Who says woman aren't mechanically minded?

I do the reloading and gun cleaning. Who's smarter?
